Default My Kumu is finished! (New pics)

So, after a lot of e-mails and high expectations, it's done...

10 x 8/14 x 12/20 x 16, SuperWoodHoops, RedNight with slight black fade. It's utterly gorgeous, I can't wait to play this baby! I'll post more pictures when I've set it up with my own snare and cymbals.

The snare in the picture isn't mine (sadly), it was made for Pekka's showroom.

Special thanks to Wavelength here for inspiration :-)

Kumu needs to give Wavelength an endorsement. Going by his old sound files, it should as awesome sounding as it looks!

Simply gorgeous! Beautiful kit! It's obvious that Kumu takes a lot of pride in their craftsmanship. You are very fortunate!

They make amazing drums, pitty they don't have any real soundbites, i think everyone just has to go on wavelengths!

I'm with Pete, have the prices changed from their 2007 list on the website? Or is that what they charged you?

Nope, its still those prices. My kit was 2269 euros for bass and two toms, 90 euros shipping. Very affordable for custom build kits with handmade shells if you ask me...

Spread the word I'd say :-) They're totally worth it.

it's a very good price considering the sonor sq2's would cost close to 5,000....and they are a custon kit too really. And by the sounds of it, they are both very high end kits

I actually had the choice between an SQ2 (22-10-12-14-14s) and having Pekka build one - same price. By the looks alone, I've not regretted my choice :-) And if the sound is anything similar to the Kumus I've played, the sound won't make me regret it either...

Nah, wrong way around ;-) But again, thanks for the inspiration - I'm not exaggerating if I say your clips made me far more confident in having Pekka build one. I had played a Kumu before, but that was years ago.

So, more pictures. I would've had better ones if my mom hadn't forgotten the good camera's battery, but some stuff just before my gig today:

Yes, iPhone cameras ain't too good, but it gives some impression.

Well, the good news, at least, your drums are your drums now, and not in the Kumu showroom. Sweet. Love your cymbals, too.

Actually, a 3 pc. Sonor SQ2 (at least in 18/14/12 setup) in lacquer finish would be about $3500 or so, which is pretty close to the $3200 for this 20/14/10 set of Kumus (that's the current conversion of 2369 euros to dollars). Comes down, in this case, to the sound you want.

Rascul: Very, very nice drums.

What is stunning is the comparable affordability of Kumu vs. their birch high-end rival, Sonor. Many places are asking over $3K for 4 pc. Sonor S-Classix kits! The Kumu 4 pc. kits are close to this price, too, but at least Kumu lets you choose your color of finish at no extra cost (compared to Sonor's very limited finish offerings). (Of course, the Recording Customs win out in price: 4 pc. Yamaha RC kit would easily be around $2100 at most. But I bet the Yamaha RC shells do not sing as nicely as the Kumus: 6 ply/6mm vs. 4 ply/3.6mm!)

Are the Kumu shells strong? 4 ply at 3.6mm is quite thin! Sonor's thinnest is the Delite at 9 ply/4mm. Just wondering.

Do the Kumus tune up high for jazz nicely? I'm assuming you are playing this style based on your setup and cymbal choices.

I've tuned them comparatively low yesterday for bigband purposes - which worked out fantastically - so I can't say too much yet of how they perform with high tuning in a band setting. I did however spend some time trying out different tunings, and from what I can tell they pretty much handle every tuning range very well. You could check out Wavelength's videos, he has a similar kit (woodhoops, almost same sizes) and he has samples of different tuning ranges.

Because of the thin shell, they have a low fundamental tone, so they won't be as crisp as, say, a traditional Gretsch or Yamaha set in 18-12-14. Also, the woodhoops make the sound warmer and more sensitive. Altogether, if you compare them with an RC or SQ2 Birch/S Classix, I'd say they sound warmer, less hi-fi (interpret that however you want) and more 'woody' (or 'earthy' if that sounds more credible). To me, it just has more personal mojo, especially since it's handmade. Moreover, this is really my kind of sound.

Considering the strength of the shells, Kumu's lugs look and behave like tubelugs, so most of the strain is diverted away from the shell. I'd say that even with shells this thin, they're as strong and durable as any other drum, given that you handle 'em normally. I wouldn't take these on tour with Marilyn Manson :-)

It allows internal micing while using an unported reso head. The port in the shell affects the sound and the playing feel of the drum very little -- porting the head has a more drastic effect.

What a beautiful set! Just gorgeous. This may be one of the best Kumus ever produced, I think.

The ported bass drum is eccentric and a cool feature.

Right now I'm using a Sonor Designer 14 x 6,5 and a GMS SE 13 x 5 as a side snare, but... By selling my old MC, there's monetary room for a Kumu Snare, so expect updates :-)

Oh, and sound clips will be here beginning of October. I don't have any room for proper recording at the moment, but I'll be recording a cd with a jazz orchestra this fall, that stuff will be posted.

That and Wavelength's are just stunning-

That is what a custom drum should look like- not these dime a dozen (ocp) type things
