I've posted a message earlier this week about a good new mid-level kit (Force 3007, Meridian...). Finally I've decided to go with a higher quality drukm...but a used one. I have seen a very good deal for a Gretsch Renown but unfortunately.. it sold very fast... :( I would like to have your opinion about the best used drum (shell kit) around 1300$ (can). 1 - Tama Starclasic 2 - Mapex Saturn 3 - Gretsch Renown ....any other option in that range of price !? (Pearl Master... Yamaha Maple Custom ($$ ). Thanks for your advice! McFly |

You can't go wrong with any of those kits, I am kind of partial to the Yamaha's though. I absolutely love my MCA's. Just got off the Guitar Center website, there are both Pearl Master Series, and Yamaha Maple Custom shell packs for that price or less. On their homepage click on used gear, then click on drums. In the search on right side of page type in Pearl Masters or Yamaha Maple Customs. There are some nice Oak Customs on there also. I hope this helps, good luck!

Out of the drum kits you mention, Tama has a lot of lines in the Starclassic series including birch, birch/bubinga, maple and bubinga, so be careful to which one you're looking at and pricing. I own the Tama Starclassic Bubinga and also the Gretsch Renowns and can attest to either of these. Depending where you live you might be able to buy a Renown new for the price you're willing to spend. I never played a Mapex Saturn.

Mapex Saturn all the way. They are an EXTREMELY undervalued kit as they don't have the massive presence in the US that Tama, Yamaha et al have. For example, a double bass Saturn kit with 3 floor toms and one rack tom sold for $900 with shipping recently on eBay. I got my 3down1up single bass Saturn kit for about $1400 (then again, one of the toms is an 18" so....). And my kit was store new!
Really really give the Saturn line a strong consideration. I doubt you'll be disappointed.

If you're looking for a Gretsch Renown, Greenbrier over on ebay has some available for about 1300 USD and they're new.
I know a lot of people who have bought from Greenbrier, they ship anywhere in the world and seem to be some of the most reliable people to buy drums from. Here's a link to their Gretsch Renowns that they have up. They have others, but I just happened to be looking at renowns myself earlier and saw you mention them in your post. http://stores.ebay.com/greenbriermus...&submit=Search Hope that helps and you get your drum kit! |
