Default Swishy, "Loose" Hi hats?

I've seen on many drummers kits that when they play their Hi hats slightly open they have sort of a swishy look and feel to them..

Exactly like here at 4:57
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZEDmZPx-FMg

Now when I play my hats slightly open, they barely move at all, yet on the video, Starkey's are waving all over the place. How do I get that feel and effect on my hats?

Thanks in advance!

Loosen the felts on your top hat.

don't tighten your top hat in the clutch, use soft felts and make sure your bottom hat can swing freely.

I recently noticed this on my hats too, no movement from them when they were closed or half closed. I loosened the nut on the inside of the bottom hat which was holding it to the stand/rod. I would imagine you would do the same on the top hat if it was tightened down to achieve the "tssss" movement.

You can also get the "tssss" if you use the barrel of the stick on the edge of the hat instead of the tip of the stick on the middle of the hat.

Having the cymbals looser in the felts makes them sound better too, they are free and give off fewer low "undertones" when allowed to breathe.
