ive noticed that David Garibaldi holds heal up on a hi hat (left foot) all the time while he plays. he uses this for balance i think. does anybody else here uses this?

I use heel up hihat. I was taught by Gene Okomato (Pearl Drums)....protege of Chuck Brown WHO GAVE DG lessons in Oakland CA in the 70's. Left heel up is OK. Heels down on the kick rules. K

i've been trying to learn to play heel up on the hats lately. a lot of pro drummers do that. you can get a more powerful "chick" that way. it's also good for playing eighth notes because you can get your foot kind of bouncing on the pedal, which helps you maintain an even rhythm at that speed and is less tiring. i still am a bit shaky with it, but i'm working on it.

Heel up is easier for most. I do heel down because it's harder, and ultimately you develop more control, which is my goal. Heel down HH really works the shin muscles, especially when you play an 8th note ostinato through the whole song. I'm a "heel down" advocate of kick and hh, better control IMO.

yes, but the thing is that he holds his lelf leg in heal up positon all the time, while he plays bass drum with right. So left leg stays up while shes doesnt doing anything :););)

that's some great playing but unfortunately you can't see your left foot in video.

In the Code of Funk book, he mentions that he uses heel up on the hihat. Kenwood Dennard taught me that years ago, keeping the heel up gets the hihats sounding nice and tight.

I began learning with the rocking motion in the left foot. Then, while living in Miami and quite a while ago, I saw one of my favorite local drummers playing heel up. Changed my playing right then and there. I'd say I play heel up on the HH 98% of the time. Same with BD foot.

I play Heal Up when I play eights or quarters with the HH with foot, but when I play HH with sticks I switch to heal down.
