Been shopping for a used kit for my son to start learning on. Found what a think is a good deal. A Gretsch Catalina Club Kit, 4 piece with a 20" bass. High hat + 3 cymbals, all Zildjian ZBTs. All for $400 with a throne. We pick it up Saturday. Question, can anyone tell me what type of wood this kit is made of? I have been on Gretsch's site and think the specific model is the Catalina Club 4pc, 'Mini Mod' kit. It does not seem to say what type of wood. No bid deal really, just wondering. Any feedback on this kit is appreciated. I am not a musician and have learned a lot here. THANKS, Lakedawgs |

I have one and it is well known to be cheaper mahog but they are light and tune well so the consensus, as far as I have been able to tell, is that no one really knows or cares because the price is right and the sound is great.
Thatsmy opinion too... |

The catalina series was made out of mahogany. Drum sets use different woods to capture the sound broadband from lows, midband and hi's. Mahongany has very good lows, good midband and starts to loose some of the hi's. Maple wood petty much covers all the band.
Birch looses some of the lows, strong on the mid's and good on the hi's. When you mic the drums their going to sound even better. I had a catalina jazz and it was mahongany and I played, jazz and classic rock with it and they sounded great. It is a great drum set that you have and it will do what ever you need it to do, it's going to be a very good kit for rock because the drum sizes are bigger and have a deeper sound than a jazz catalina kit, when I played rock with my catalina I had to really lay into it to get the sound that I wanted out of it when playing rock, but your kit was designed for playing rock. It always comes down to what a drummer can do on any kit. Just have fun with that kit and you can play any gig with it. You dont need expensive drums to sound good. Enjoy. |

The catalia club series is not real mahogany, but philipine mahogany. The correct name of the wood is lauan/luan.
