I just came across this remarkable gem - a rendition of 21st Century Schizoid Man by the Crimson Jazz Trio, with former King Crimson drummer, Ian Wallace on drums. I love it!

I'm also a big fan of Pat Boone's version of Smoke on the Water:

What totally unexpected cover versions have you enjoyed? Not allowed to mention The Flying Lizards's version of Money because it's too obvious :)

Ray Alder of Fates Warning did a side band called "Engine" and they recorded a hard rock version of The Cure's "Fascination Street". Peter Parada (whom I went to school with and is now with The Offsping) played drums:

Dream Theater did a great version of Elton John's "Funeral for a Friend" back in the 90's that was excellent:

but gosh, there are so many, I could be here all day:
Dream Theater's version of Ozzy's "Diary of a Madman"
Type O Negative's version of Neil Young's "Cinnamon Girl"
Judas Priest's version of the Joan Baez song "Diamonds and Rust".

But here is an odd one:
Rasputina did a version of Led Zepplin's "Rock and Roll" on just two cellos, voice and drums. It's really weird, and almost wrong, which is probably why they did it.
Here is a badly recorded live version:

Oh come now, PFOG - that was Rolf's finest moment! To resore your faith in Aussies playing Led Zep covers, try Nat and Dayne's version of Whole Lotta Love. Quite a duo, eh?

Abe, I've heard that version of Smoke on the Water. The instrumentation is goosebumps material but the vocals ... well, they're ... funny :) Like the Indian pop cover too.

DED, that Dream Theater cover is a pretty faithful cover, as they tend to do. Great song, one of my fave Elton numbers and they do it justice.

BD, like the start, very Floyd (Echoes period). I can't think of a better guy to cover Bonzo than Danny Carey. He kills it.

I forgot a cover I especially love - John Cale's Heartbreak Hotel. The passion just pours out of him - blows me away every time I hear it

A lot of hard rock version of hard rock songs here - only harder lol

In another conversation there was mention of The Beatles's Tomorrow Never Knows and it reminded me of 801's outstanding cover of the song - Phil Manzanera, Simon Phillips, Eno, Francis Monkman - what a lineup!

nhzoso, I remember that Faith No More cover. Great stuff - hilarious clip too :)

Rascul, I saw your links, which lead me to his cover of Paranoid Android - the first few mins of it are incredible.

Paul, that Dread Zeppelin mashup is really something - and somehow you managed to tie in Led Zep covers with the John Cage cover :)

With all due respect, do we dare mention most of Weird Al's Work? sorry Bermuda

I always liked Motley Crue's remake of "Helter Skelter" check out Devo's remake of "Satisfaction" the old Rolling Stones tune the drumbeat is totally unorthodox from Charlie's groove.

oh and Santana's version of "Black Magic Woman" Fleetwood Mac was the original band.

Keep Swattin'
