Yes this will definitely start some hostility. However I must join in.

My list:

1) Tama
2) DW
3) Gretsch
4) Pearl
5)Yamaha

The first three are all very close for me, each has their advantages. Tama is numero uno for me probably out of brand loyalty. I don't have any experience with the other big names like Ludwig, Sonor, etc.

I second the notion. Whatever works for you works man. And everyone knows DW is number one.

haha "best" for what?

Gigging on a weekly basis?

Session work?

Allowing countless drummers to beat on?

I don't understand this post....

You can have the "best" kit on earth. Hand made costing thousands of dollars but if it isn't tuned.......it will sound like garbage.

ok...the "best" drums on earth are:

The ones I can afford.

That's pretty close, but I'd put them in this order:
DW
Gretsch
Ludwig
Mapex
Pearl
Premier
Slingerland
Sonor.
Tama.
Yamaha

Not so much because I think DW is best or Yamaha is worst, but because I like the way it looks when it's in alphabetical order.

10. Yamaha?! I'm coming for you now, man >=|

Seriously, though, this is a stupid thing to say. The best drum brands depend on what you play, how you play it, and umpteen other variables.

You've put Tama in at #9. Lars Ulrich uses Tama. Does that mean that he's using a crappy kit? The drummer for Metallica is using a crappy kit?

See my point?

I love the Stage Customs to death. If somebody gave me the choice between a huge, great Ludwig kit, and a huge, great Yamaha kit, I'd pick the Yamaha kit.

You can't make sweeping statements regarding this kind of thing.

1. Mine
2. Then yours
3. Then yours
4. Then yours
5. Then yours
etc.

"Best" is multidimensional and subjective. For example, how important to you is looks? Are looks more important than how they sound? For some, how the drum looks is critical. Take the gold Ludwig Triumphal snare at a MSR for around $11,000. Some have said it looks great, but its sound is not on par with how great it looks. Others might consider collectability and sound qualities in their argument for best. An anniversary snare drum with number 1 out of 20 from a famous drum company might be their vote for best. Others might vote for a particular drum as being best because it is the brand used they by drumming idol. Ans so on ....

With the advances in drum technology and craftsmanship, just about any top tier drum will be killer for most drummers and for most applications most of the time! That said, Gretsch USA Customs will get my vote for number 1.

Based upon your drum choices- I would rate them on quality and reliability. If this is popularity contest, the list would be different, but the thread title says best brands, not most popular. Ludwig's QC sucks, and Slingerland (premier too?) is a non-issue at this point. I would probably replace Slingerland with Pacific, or some other popular brand. Top 5 are pretty much my bias, but I would be happy with any of them.

1. Yamaha
2. Pearl
3. DW
4. Sonor
5. Tama
6. Gretsch
7. Mapex
8.. Ludwig
9.. Premier
10. Slingerland

I personally don't like DW.

I love my High End Mapex kit, and I think you find "best" kits in at least every major brand, and probably in most minor brands too.

I think a more reasonable way to get a serious chart would be by comparing hardware!

As GD says, almost impossibly subjective. Ask this question to DMC & Leo and see how much common ground you can find.

I think they are all great drum manufactures in their own way. If it pleases your ears then that's all that matters.

When the Beatles were starting to get successful and Brian said it's time for a new drum kit, Ringo intended to get a new Premier kit to replace his old one that went back to the Rory Storm days but chose Ludwig because he happened to see a Ludwig black oyster color chip on the drum store manager's desk. He also chose a Rogers tom mount because Ludwig's sucked.

Like guitars and other instruments, it's not the brand, it's what you can do with it. That makes any brand YOUR brand.

I agree that the answer to the question in the title is "impossible to list because it's too subjective".

Sounds good to me that's why I play and endorse Peace both for live and studio acoustic jazz applications. 3 cheers for the excellent in quality and sound but rarely talked about underdogs of drum making!

Yes and just like other stupid "best" threads it comes down to purely a subjective thing for each individual in the end........

This seems like a really pointless thread...everyone's got different preferences.

You can't just make an absolutely judgement, because different companies do different things better than others.

BUT if I were to do this little survey, I would have to say, of the MAJOR companies, these are the best...

Drums:

1. Pearl/Yamaha
2. Tama
3. Sonor
4. DW
5. Gretsch/Ludwig
6.Mapex
7. ddrum (higher end stuff only)

That being said, I think the hardware lines for some companies are definitely of a higher or lower calibre than the shells they make.

1. Pearl
2. Yamaha
3. DW
4. Tama

If I was going to single out a WORST drum brand, I would pick Peace. Seriously, oh my god. I have had nothing but hell with all Peace kits. One set that my friend got was missing half the lugs!

And the cymbals... Oh god... They're literally just circles of metal. Totally unhammered. Totally terrible. Never again will I use a Peace kit.

Kalem: sounds like you had a bad experience with a lower-end Peace kit? Steamer uses the high-end bubinga kits. Any company's low-end kits are going to be fraught with potential quality issues. That's why at the end of the day I feel it is only worth one's time to bother with high-end kits--better chance of quality and sound and less chance of problems. You get what you pay for, as they say.

High end yes indeed Robert...... these 2 kits are ANYTHING BUT their bottom end beginner kits.

9 ply AA Flame bubinga in kit #1 and 9 ply Canadian rock maple shells with a phosphor bronze snare in kit #2. Both have spent equal time on the concert stage and the recording studio. Like to hear some pro level CD releases with them Kalem?

I don't judge other companies on their lowest level product offerings...neither should others is my advice.

Too subjective. Is this best vs best or best overall? I absolute terms, it's DW, but for me personally Tama, mainly because of the rock solid hardware that they are known for.
