Default RIP Jake Hanna

The drumming world lost another great today with the passing of Jake Hanna. Jake swung hard every time he sat behind his kit. I was turned on to Jake by my father and I cut my teeth listening to his records with Woody Herman, the Concord All-Stars, and more. I'll always remember his simple, straightforward swing and the sensititivity and consideration with which he supported the music he played. I got the chance to meet him many years ago at a jazz festival in Toronto. He was kind and very funny that day. I'm sad to hear of his passing.

Rest in Peace, Mr. Hanna.

Los Angeles, February 12, 2010:
It is my sad duty to report the passing of the great jazz drummer Jake Hanna in Los Angeles. Jake died tonight from complications of a blood disease.

Jazz has lost one of the true greats, and I ,and many others, have lost a friend.
We'll miss him.

How sad. Mr. Hanna was not only a class act behind the set, but away from it as well. Many drummers are not aware how much he contributed to drumming as an artform.

I read about his passing when I logged on. I had to go listen to his playing immediately. He made the music feel good and extremely easy to listen to. I'll be praying for his family and friends.

I first met him around 6 years ago at PASIC. He showed me a lot of brush technique durring the show and after we went out to a bar together and had a few beers. He told me all kinds of stories about working for Woody Herman and how close he and Buddy Rich had been. 2 or 3 hours may have passed with just he and I talking music and drums.
I'm going to miss him...

Jake was one of my heros. I vividly remember standing in front of Woody's band in 1964 at the Palais Royal in Toronto, with Sal Nistico playing about 30 choruses of 'Sister Sadie', at such a ferocious tempo, with Chuck Andrus on bass and Jake, that I didn't see how they could keep it up! Jake always swung, great taste & ears, and had a wonderful sense of humour. I will miss him. I have a letter from him and a signed photo that I took that hangs in my drum room, and I will treasure them.

Damn and blast it! Such a great drummer was Jake Hanna! I was alerted by DW so had to post. I urge all young drummers to check Jake out. He was like a bolt of lightning!
