Default 18 inch Floor Tom Rebuild

Bought this 18 x 16 for 30.00 and will make a bass drum out of it. Wooden hoops and claws have been ordered. Will keep you up to date. Has been sanded and three coats of primer have been sprayed on. The final will be a bright yellow. The picture with the hardware is how I bought it with the wrap removed and a very rough surface.

Great project...keep us updated. I have a vintage Speed King thats begging for a home and was considering a 16" floor tom bass conversion. I could not be that cruel to my Renown, where did you come across the drum? Ebay...? What is/was it?

I visit www.ghostnote.com looking for deals in the For Sale section. I found this drum for 30.00 and two wood hoops for 30.00. The inside is better wood than the outside and so it was wrapped. The guy who took the wrap off didn't want to bother. I have plenty of time. It was a Pearl floor tom.

Gruntersdad, that looks like a sweet project; I have been doing some looking around wanting to re-do a kit myself...interested in seeing how yours looks when you are done.

Great project, but why bright yellow? Did the massive behemoth set that was posted some months ago inspire you? That was bright yellow, but with an 28" kick if I remember right. Not really my color.

Well actually, the outside layer of wood is not suitable for stain, as I had hoped to match my piccolo snare stain color. Some of the older bop kits were yellow, and since I'm older, I thought what the hay. I have another snare that I'm going to refinish in yellow also.

I had to drill out the lower hole on the shell for the mounts but they will work fine. thanks again. If you look at the last photo you can see the bottom hole is a bit oval.

I can hardly tell at all. Looks a lot better than the hack-job I did on my Ludwig floor tom.

I just bought this 12 inch tom from eBay to go with my 18 inch floor/bass drum.

I have the snare and bass drum ready for paint as soon as it gets warm enough. Waiting for the 70's on the thermometer. The primer and yellow paint are in waiting.

Only one left to find is an inexpensive 14 floor tom.

This is the red tom I took the wrap off of. The wood underneath is spectacular for a wrapped drum.

When you first said yellow, I didn't know what to think really... now, after seeing your snare, I really can't wait to see the rest of the kit. Deffinately unique! Are you matching the drums by wood type as you go, or really just getting the sizes you want. It doesnt look like your getting drums from the same series is all.

Pearl Export Bass, Ludwig Rocker Tom, Taye Studio Maple snare. Floor tom yet to be adopted. Sort of a Brad and Angelina set.

The snare sounds great. It is a Taye Studio Maple that I have had for some time.

Oh he's had them horizontal and every other possible way that you can think of. Your snare is sharp looking. Robert Sweet (Stryper) has some neat looking set ups over the years. He painted them himself. As of recently he has a custom yellow and black set from DDrum. They were the 1st to custom paint a set yellow and black for him, so he says.

Here are photos of the first coats of yellow going on the 18 inch bass. The outer layer of wood on the bass was so bad that I had to paint three coats of oil based enamel black on to fill the crappy grain. Buyer beware.
