Default Jim Hodder

Anyone dig his work with Steely Dan? He had some good drumming on "Do It Again" and "Reelin in the Years". He had a killer snare/hi-hat groove at the beginning of "Bodhisaitva".
He did a great job singing (yes he actually sang on a couple of tracks on their debut album) on "Midnite Cruiser"
Let's discuss him.

A terrific drummer with a great voice. His work with Jeff Porcaro (back in the days when Steely Dan used two drummers) was great. Unfortunately, Jim died in 1990 after drowning in his swimming pool. A sad loss.

Speaking of which, last Thursday (June 5th) was the 18th year of his passing. He was only 42 when the drumming world lost him.

After he left SD, didn't he start doing session work? He was reported to have played with Sammy Hagar and David Soul in the late 70's.

I loved Jim's playing. I found it inspiring to hear a drummer play both jazzy and simply and his playing on Steely Dan albums is amongst my main influences.

He was one of those tasty dummers whose beats are harder than they sound and he always played for the song.

Gone but not forgotten.

Some more great Jim Hodder tracks:

Your Gold Teeth - super funky and clean

King of the World - tasty fusion groove

It's a bit mind-blowing how many fine drummers have died young. Being a drummer for early Dan seemed to be a hazardous position, notwithstanding having to deal with Walter and Donald's standards.
