Do you want a bigger boomy sound? Or a wetter sound like metal music?

The Aquarian Super Kick II is the only bass drum head that sounds great and holds up to a mule kick. Give it a shot!

Remo Powerstroke 3. Muffles the head without killing it, like the SuperKick does :P

I don't play metal, but rock is one of the varieties that I play. I use an Evans EQ4 batter head on all four of my bass drums. It's a one ply (10 mil) head with an internal overtone ring. I have the Evans clear beater patch installed. Depending on how they're tuned, you get great bottom end with a good beater slap. The Evans EQ3 batter head might be a good head choice for your use. It's a 2 ply with a very focused attack, less lower end rumble.

There are a lot of great bass drum batter heads, it all has to do with what sound you're after.

I just switched from an SK1 to a Powerstroke 3 and I REALLY like how the PS3 sounds to the SK1. Little more open and little more tone. You can always use a little felt strip underneath the head to dampen the tone if you want. That way you can customize the sound to your liking where with a head like the SK1 it is what it is.

Yep. I've been using the SK for 10 years now. SK 2 on my 26 and SK 1 for my 22's.

I'd go myself with the SuperKick I and I know that if you use a kickpad, this head will serve you well for years to come...

I've always like the PS3s. I have an EMAD right now, but I don't like it as much.

The head that came on my 22 x 18 Yamaha was a Powerstroke 3 but I couldn't quite get the sound I looking for. The Superkick 1 was recommended by a friend who's a touring drummer so I switched. I can play unmiked with no muffling but use a small pillow if I'm miked up.

Obviously, every kick drum is different so find the one that works for you!

+1 on the PS3 - best head in the universe. I've played all types and like the clear the best. The coated is fairly dry and has a very focused attack. The smooth white is somewhere in between the clear and coated and is also very nice.

Well then I would also say that the Powerstroke 3 may be a good choice. I have one and it produces a solid boom. All i need for muting is a felt strip. Mine is coated and quite warm...if you want a bit more attack you could get one of those mylar patches...that should make things sound nice.

And that's the great thing about the PS3 you can tailor your sound by using felt strips if need be instead of being dedicated to a built in one

I have an EQ3 on mine and it seems to be great, my 24 booms with it and I smack it good!

All the SKs are pretty heavily muffled. Aquarian does offer a head equivalent to the PS3, the Full Force batters and reso's.

I had been using Evans EMAD single ply batters for some time, but recently have had some issues with the cheapo plastic foam ring tray cracking and disintegrating.
I have tried the SKI as well as the SKII and have found both of those heads to be too muffled with no where near the "click" attack I loved from the EMADS.
I went as far as to try a REMO powersonic. What a waste of $40 that was!

I am looking to try something different on my new kit (s)
The PS3s have been getting the nod from more people on more drummer forums, so I think I'll try one...maybe..?

If you like the clicky attack of Evans why not try one of their EQ series similar to the powerstroke series from Remo
