Default My Oak Custom in Honey Amber with Wood Hoops.

Will be arriving shortly... Sorry, couldn't wait.

I'm starting this thread out of the sheer excitement and anticipation.

The specs are as follows:

20 X 17 Bass

10 X 8 Tom

14 X 14 Floor Tom

13 X 9 Pearl Limited Mahogony snare...

I have natural maple hoops coming for the toms and a contoured custom stellar hoop for the snare. I will post pics of the whole process. Stay tuned for the boxes coming Fedex this afternoon.

Can't wait to see them. I have Oak Custom myself and they are great sounding drums.

I just received my Maple Absolutes and Yamaha's quality an attention to detail is top notch.

When shopping around I looked very closely at Oaks but they wouldn't make the sizes I wanted, so I paid a little more and went with the Maples.

I am sure your Oaks will serve you well.

I, too, own Oak Customs. The grain and finish of your new set rivals mine, haha!
It would be wonderful if you would keep us updated with pics and sound samples.
Have you chosen heads yet?

I'm just gonna keep the stock heads on em'. I've played yamaha's with stock heads before and they sound fine to me. Do you have a recommendation for the oaks?

As for heads I use the Remo clear Emperors. They sound great on them IMO. The stock heads are clear Ambassador's Remo made for Yamaha (not the same as Remo's regular Ambassadors) If you have the money go for new heads you will see a big difference. Here is a picture of my Oaks in Red Sedona finish.

For a lot of pop/rock stuff I use Aquarian Super 2s. The two-ply heads roll off some of the oak attack and allow you a lower tuning to really take advantage of the solid fundamental.

For big band, jazz and some theatre work I really love the sound of Fibreskyns or Aquarian Modern Vintage heads. The warmness of the heads compliments the oak's natural bite and attack and at higher tunings the drums speak so quickly and resolve to their fundamental without much effort: i.e. I can hit them softer and still get lots of tone and volume.

My guess is that I'll end up throwing some coated remo's on em' if they are too bright, but really I play so many venues where I'm only miking the kick that it'd be nice to have some natural brightness to the toms. I bet I won't even have to mic this kick though. It's 2 inches bigger than my old primary kick.

I've got gigs lined up pretty solid for the next 3 months (starting end of Dec.) so I'll have plenty of chances to play them in different rooms to see what I think. I definitely appreciate the "heads up" from other oak owners though.

This is what worked best for me on my Oaks. They gave me a nice warm, ultra low end, good snappy highs and fairly reduced mids. Basically birch on steroids.

Toms

Batter: Coated Ambassadors
Resonant: Clear Ambassadors

Bass

Batter: Clear Powerstroke 3 w/falam slam
Resonant: Fiberskyn Powerstroke 3 FA w/port

I didn't have an Oak snare, so I can't recommend heads.

This combo gave me full warm tones. It brought out the best of the Oak in every situation. They sang under close mics, they punched on stage. YUM!

The snare hoops came today. I scored a killer deal on ebay, $107 (including shipping)... These are 32 ply maple hoops with a contoured edge from Stellar Hoops. The snare as I said is a 13 X 9 Pearl Limited Mahogany.

Thanks Skul, I'll post some gig pics no later than the 27th, and probably a nice little shot of everything when I get the final order of hoops today.

Man, Garvin, those are really beautiful. I'm Facebook-buddies with Frank Briggs and he's playing these now...he's been ranting and raving about them.

I'm sure you're gonna love 'em!

Here's another tease. I got the hoops for the toms yesterday, but they sent me a 14" with the incorrect amount of lug holes. Here's the 10". Its blurry cause I was in a poorly lit room with my cell phone camera.

Actually, you'd be surprised, hoops make a big difference. Even switching between flanged metal and die cast metal hoops produces a different sound. If you change the vibration properties of the hoop, you change the sound of the drum. Hoops and bearing edges are the most important elements in the transfer of energy from the head to the shell. So wood hoops will likely change the level and nature of overtones.

I should be getting the 14" hoop by the 24th... I ordered them from Drummaker.com and those guys are great. They are super attentive and are great about communicating. Even with the order confusion, I'm extremely satisfied with the service, particularly given the shipping insanity of the Christmas season here in the US. Three cheers for Andy!

Believe me, I'll set it up and take some nice pics between now and New Years. I did take the earlier advice and ordered a set of Ambassadors (from Just Drums!) as well.

I'm definitely ready for a gig.

Okay, finally some photos of the kit from its first gig. I'll give a little more feedback later, but I just wanted to post pics first. Any thoughts on the blonde hoops? I'm wondering if I should finish them with a darker color than the shells.

But I'd put some maple bass drums hoops with the same color of your toms hoops.

They look fantastic. A darker shade (more of a mahogany) would look even better in my opinion. Absolutely beautiful drums all the same! Congratulations on a great new set.

Hey Garvin, how's that AA Raw Ride sound? I'm on the market for a new ride at the minute and I've heard some good samples of them but not really in the context of music.

Hope you're well,

Kev

I love mine. Its fairly dry, and a very clean stick sound. It has a crash with an extremely quick decay. I use it in a blues band and it carries well over the volume. I've played it in jazz setups though and there is a bit of an odd resonance at low volumes, which I'm not crazy about. I really don't think you can go wrong at the price they are offered though.

I like the hoops on the snare more than on the toms.
