Hmm I think you could be right. Black/Death metal didnīt exist back then, so I think he really was the first one to play blastbeats. I also like his work with Anthrax, he is fast and dynamic and looks somehow... sympathic.

1940s/50s/60s - Big band drummers bring it to the public, e.g. the Buddy Rich Stick Trick video on Drummerworld.
1984 - DRI, Dirty Rotten LP - sped up punk beat (also, Cryptic Slaughter)
1985 - SOD, Speak English Or Die
1987 - Napalm Death, Scum - used as white noise
1989 - Morbid Angel and Altars Of Madness = first record to make the blast a timekeeping element
1990 - Cannibal Corpse = Cannibal/Bomb blast
1993 - Morbid Angel again, Covenant - Pushed to 230odd
1993 - Cryptopsy - Blasphemy Made Flesh = Hyperblast
2000 - Origin Demo = Gravity blast
2005 - Nile - Annihilation, Hate Eternal - I, Monarch - pushed to near 270, plus other patterns with free limbs

The history of blast beats.

Hey Ive been playing Crush by Anthrax, and want to make sure I'm playing it correctly. Does anyone have any transcriptions, or know of any videos that show him playing it? Ive searched through YouTube etc, searched for tabs with no luck. As far as I can tell he plays 16th's on the bass drum the whole way through with sweet dynamics. I have a feeling there are a lot of flams and stuff im missing on the toms however. Anyway any help would be appreciated.

Yet again another influence... Mr Bernante!

First time I heard "Among the Living" I almost fell off my seat.

One of the first drummers along with Dave Lombardo & Lars Ulrich to blast out those double bass drums in the early to mid 80's.

A true Metal Pioneer!

Great Drummer!

Charlie is one of my favorite drummers in the metal genre. I have always liked his style and I remember being blown away by the speed of his feet in "Gung Ho". Anthrax is one of my all time favorite bands and "We've Come For You All" with John Bush on vocals is one of their best albums. Charlie wrote most of it too and the drumming is very creative.

One of my favorite drummers but listening to him makes me want to burn my kit. I find his drumming harder than Vinnie Pauls and a lot harder than Lars Ulrich.I think I saw somewhere he also writes most of the guitar riffs for Anthrax.

Charlie is a good drummer.

However, I don't think he has a "style" that is his.

You listen to Vinnie play, you know it is Vinnie. Same with Ulrich, Adler, Bitner and of course the KING, Dave Lombardo.

Charlie is good, but lacks a difinitive style in my opinion.

Also, I have their live CD and his tempo's fluctuate pretty significantly. Especially on AIR in the beginning with the double bass. The entire song slows down during the initial double bass play. And yes, I checked it with a metronome!

Great technically, but lacks style.
