How did you start drumming? It was something I always wanted to do. I was sick for about 5 years and wasn't able to do much of anything. Thankfully, I started feeling better a year ago. We bought rockband and I was instantly addicted. So I got a real set and the rest is history!

real name?
Jeroen
age?
28
how long been playing?
12 years
origin of user name?
Pretty obvious
top 5 drummers?
Not gonna start that one, the names are well known, I am very funned of Elvin Jones but I like most of the listed here, so I’ll give names who deserve more attention in my opinion: Brian Viglione (Dresden Dolls), Kris Duerinckx (my teacher and quite possibly belgium’s finest, in fact make that Be-Ne-Lux finest.), Dernado Coleman (son of Ornette, awesome swing-feel while achieving awesome speed)
I do can say Buddy Rich will never be my number 1: Great drummer but to big an ego. I can go on forever about this, don’t get me started.
make of drumkit?
Pearl BRX masterseries colorsetting “midnight fade” & Roland SPD-S. Iron Cobra double bass pedal.
make of cymbal?
Paist Alpha series, yes, I should replace those. In fact: that’s what’s on top of my to do list: Zildjan K customs.
where do you practice?
In drum-room.
are you in a band/s?
Mother Superior – New Skool Jazz System (myspace to come)
The New Confettis. (www.newconfettis.be) a 90’s party- & showband not bringing covers but medleys from the nineties in a boiling hot whirlwind of a show.
covers or originals?
Mother Superior: our own numbers (along with piano & bass)
what style of music?
Mother Superior: Jazz, smooth & cool
The new confettis: everything from pop & rock.
favourite take out food?
Don’t like take out food. In fact it hate it. With Belgian French fries as exception.
Mexican food, well cooked my favorite.
country?
Belgium.
one really odd fact about yourself?
Is there anyone else who thinks Dana Scully is hot? : - )
how did you start drumming?
Played music for quite some time before I started drumming but then I got behind a kit by accident and that was that. I practically stopped immediately playing the clarinet and started drumming. The love and amount of playing time only got more intense over the years. After evening classes @ Jazzstudio Antwerp I ended up 3 years ago with Kris Duerinckx.
*I now got a daytime job (money & security, you know…) but all of my free time is dedicated to music & drumming.
*I still take lessons,
*I weekly teach somme kiddo’s to play (separate, 1 hour lessons each) some of with advance amazingly,
*Got gigs with the groups I’m playing with and a month ago I got my first request to give a little drum demo – as I am (when time lets me) for hire for gigs, studio work,…
Aim is in time to quit daytime job and make a living out of drumming. But right now I’m happy that the money starts coming in – it’s not much, but it’s a very nice extra.

how did you start drumming? when i was in grade school, we had to play an instrument for at least one year. i wanted to play the drums, but my mom said they were to loud. so i "settled" on the sax (still enjoyed it). when i was 13 (still played the sax) i got my first guitar (yes i still play, yes i suck). at the tender young age of 15 i started playing bass (dont play any more, but i like to go to the music shop and d*ck around). the entire time this was going on i was messing with my homies drums, dreaming of the day i could play like a champion. basically thats the story. i have spent the past 20 years walking into the music shop with the intent to purchase, and i walk out because i dont want to hear the wife complain. well, two weeks ago, i picked up some sticks and a practice pad and went to town...i quickly realized the pad was great, but a snare was needed to really grasp what i was doing. so, i went out the sunday after christmas and picked up my first snare.

how did you start drumming? This is a quite funny point, I started drumming when I was in this heavy metal band and I was the singer, but in breaks and everytime our drummer was doing another thing, I ran down to sit behind the drumming kit and just make some noise. With time, they kicked me out from the band so I swore revenge and from then I decided to learn drums. But what I never thought was that I fell in love of drums in a so deep way that I can't stop thinking about them, definitely my true love and with time I came to be good on it, so my aim is to be an ultimate drummer.

real name? Donald
age? 16
how long been playing? 4 years
origin of user name? It's an account I made up a long time ago for a game, and since then I've used it for virtually everything.
top 5 drummers? I take my inspirtation from Steve Gadd and Vinnie Colaiuta. My friends Uncle showed them to me, and I take my own spin I guess on their playing style. I also like Jon Wysocki, from Staind. Mike Portnoy is good, but not the best. Aaron Gillespie, in my eyes, is also a talented drummer.
make of drum kit? Gretsch
make of cymbal? Zildjian, low end sadly. But I'm saving up, after all this time.
where do you practice? The only corner of the house my parents will let me set up.
are you in a band/s? I was, but we don't really do anything now... Lack of determination in everyone but me and the guitar player. It all just sort of died out.
covers or originals? I like to make up my own stuff, but I can do a couple of songs for covers.
what style of music? I like to jump alll over. A little bit of jazz, and mellow stuff. Then switch over to rock, or attempt to improve my double bass skills.
country? USA
how did you start drumming? It all started back to simple percussion in middle school. Eventually I played the whole set in one of our school performances, and after that I got my own =)

I just bought a new drum kit after not playing for many years. The army, undergraduate engineering school, material science graduate school and working full time did not leave much free time to do some of the things I enjoyed. You live a few times and you have to make the best of it. Just bought a new Gretsch Catalina Club Jazz set and some K's. When I was playing last there was only one cymbal company "Zildjian!" Paste had just started and I was not impressed with them at the time. However, I think they have come a long way since I first heard them. I had a set of keystone ludwigs that I kept patched together at the time.

I would be interested in any discussions on the physics of the drums or the construction of them being that I have a technical background.

A Stradivarius violin is a standard for being the best sounding violin. So many musical instrument makers seek to reproduce this sound and understand Acoustically what it is about the Stradivarius that makes it sound so good. I would be interested in understanding what makes a drum sound good. Is there a standard?

I have read about the bearing edges, and there is too much controversy in that area. I refer to the link below.

http://online.physics.uiuc.edu/cours...inal_Paper.pdf

The link above shows some interesting work on the acoustics of the drum. Note: they mention the shells and the mounting to the shells as having an effect on the sound of the drum. Below is an interesting drum from the Whitney Company in where they try to solve this problem.

Real name- Simon
Age- 27

How long been playing- on and off randomly, but now I've got a kit, hopefully a lot more!

Origin of user name
- boringly, it's a university nick name

Top 5 drummers- Stewart Smith (of deliriou5? fame), Most of the drummers from Hillsong Church, Australia in the the "United" band.

Make of drumkit- Pearl
Make of cymbal- don't yet own any, borrowing some Amati budget ones at the mo
Where do you practice- Bedroom
Are you in a band/s- yes, sort of, at church, normally play acoustic gtr and sing though. Sometimes Bass, sometimes electric, maybe drums in the future.
Covers or Originals- i do both, but not really relevant
What style of music- Rock based Contemporary Christian praise and worship music
Favorite take out food- F 'n' C
Country- England baby!
One really odd fact about yourself- I have a strong gag reflex (well, you wanted "odd"!)
How did you start drumming- got taught the basic 4/4 beat at a camp, and have since then dabbled on different peoples' kits. Now I have almost a full one myself.

Real name- Rob
Age- 26
How long been playing- i'm primarily a guitarist but started taking drum lessons about 2 years ago due to the guitarist/drummer ratio being 500000000/1 thus making it ni on impossible to find drummers to jam with. had to stop due to moving to somewhere volume is frowned upon. hopefully gonna get hold of an electric kit n take it up again asap though
Origin of user name- my eternal desire to be attatched to simon neils face
Top 5 drummers- mark heron, igor cavalera, danny carey, ben johnston and last but not least the "who's your favourite drummer?" get out of jail free card jon bonham
Make of drumkit- whatever make the crappy beginners kit i've got is
Make of cymbal- ditto
Where do you practice- nowhere at the moment. i used to practice at my dads office which is in the middle of a deserted business park until he decided having a drum kit by the photocopier looked unprofessional
Are you in a band/s- kind of. im currently jamming with a bassist which is going pretty well, but were in search of a drummer funnily enough, and until we find 1 i think i'd be lying if i called it a band. oh yeah n i play guitar in a rhythm and blues mo towny covers band too
Covers or Originals- both
What style of music- all kinds of rock/metal. main influences being oceansize, biffy clyro, tool, a perfect circle, queens of the stone age, mr bungle stuff like that. the covers band i'm in does blues brothers commtmentsy type stuff. not really my sort of thing but it's fun to play
Favorite take out food- anything that makes pooing a hellish messy endeavor but tastes good enough to be worth it
Country- england
One really odd fact about yourself- i've got a wierd extra ear lobe

Hi drummers!

Chris Georgenes
41
Since I was 10.
I was in an original power rock/funk trio in the 90's and before each live performance, fans would often be heard shouting "BUST MY HEAD" in anticipation. It had a nice ring to it.

Drums: Yamaha Recording Customs (cherry).
Mostly Sabian, some Zildjian, 1 Paiste.
Currently in a Motown/classic rock cover/party band.
Favorite take out food? Ribs
USA
One really odd fact about yourself? Once jumped out of a perfectly good airplane at 11,000 feet.
how did you start drumming? With 2 sticks.
Oh...I bought my first album when I was 10 (Bruce Springsteen's Born to Run). Played to it with sticks on my mom's couch (didn't even own a practice pad at the time). Poked holes in the middle of frisbees, tied string through the holes and suspended them from the ceiling over the couch for my cymbals (ok I was weird but desperate for gear).
