real name? Jacques

age? 32

how long been playing? I played in a marching band at school and messed around a bit on kits. Managaed to complete most of my (compulsory) military service in the army band. Then I gave up for about 15 years. And now I've finally fulfilled a dream by getting myself a kit. So essentially I'm starting from scratch.

origin of user name? I've always had a thing for cats.

make of drumkit? Pearl Export with entry-level Paiste cymbals. Not fantastic quality, but considering what musical instruments cost here in South Africa, I'm pretty happy.

make of cymbal? Paiste

where do you practice? Empty office at work.

are you in a band/s? A co-worker has recently switched from playing guitar to learning to play the bass. So we kind of jam together and are looking for a guitarist etc.

covers or originals? Aiming to do all originals one day.

what style of music? Indie-style pop/rock (Supergrass, The Killers,The Pixies, Franz Ferdinand, The Breeders, Gomez etc.)

favourite take out food? Pizza

country? South Africa

one really odd fact about yourself? I love playing golf - also recently started. I have two aims for the forseeable future: To become a drummer and to become a golfer.

how did you start drumming? School marching band, huge music collection, played in a garage band at school, love being part of music creation, love live music.

Default Re: Introduce Yourself

Hello, all. I'm new here and I figured this would be the most appropriate place for my first post. I have just recently purchased an awesome set of drums (the first set I have owned since 1986) and returned to my first musical love after many years as a bassist.
I stumbled upon this site while researching brands of drums and cymbals in anticipation of getting back into drumming. I have since spent several hours here reading up on great drummers and reading as many posts in the forums as possible before jumping in myself.
The drum set I sold in 1986 was a standard 5 piece set of Rogers (Big R) with all Zildjian cymbals. It was not the set I wanted at the time... just the set I had (local musician sold it to me complete for $500.00, cymbals and all). I was determined to get a set that I would be inspired to play the second time around, yet I still didn't want to spend a mint doing it. What I decided on was the Mapex Pro M series: Beautiful, all maple drums with top notch hardware and a price tag I could live with. I went with an ALMOST Bonham set-up: 24x16 bass (Bonham's was 26x14), 14x10 mounted tom, 16x16 and 18x16 floor toms. The snare is different, too: matching maple-shelled 14x8. I have absolutely no cymbals yet, but that is a good thing in a way: I will be forced to work on the basics and learn to tune the drums well before being distracted by all that shiny bronze! I'll be making a trip to Atlanta Pro Percussion to begin assembling my cymbal set up soon. Hats and a ride are the first objectives.

I look forward to learning from you guys. I started to go with 'Rusty' as my user name, but 'rusty' doesn't even begin to describe my drumming at present. I look at my situation as a chance to start over... I've had several years to forget all the sloppy technique that was my trademark as a teenager. Now I can learn to do it right.

real name? Jeff Baker
age? 39
how long been playing? Played for 7 years... switched to bass for about 20... just returned to drumming
origin of user name? Political orientation... I'm not left-handed
top 5 drummers? Peart, Bonham, Stan Lynch (Tom Petty), Sean Kinney (Alice in Chains), Steve Gadd
make of drumkit? Mapex Pro M
make of cymbal? none as of yet
where do you practice? Heaven... Well, a one bedroom apartment above my detached garage on a sparsely inhabited road... so yeah... heaven!
are you in a band/s? planned informal jam sessions with other hobbyists
covers or originals? we'll likely do covers and improv/jams
what style of music? most likely, classic rock/rock/blues/80's metal/grunge...
favourite take out food? Chinese
country? Not so much... but Dwight Yokam is O.K. (U.S)
one really odd fact about yourself? I'm proud of my Mini-Van
how did you start drumming? Joined the school band program in 6th grade

edited for spelling and clarity...

Default New to the site

Hey everyone! I've been playing the drums now for about 9 years, but recently have gotten interested in kicking it up a notch and getting more involved. I jam with freinds once in a while, but I'm really looking for a commited band to join up with. My kit is a Pearl export series, sessions studio snare, and Zildjians. I'm sure I'll learn alot of new stuff on this forum.

I might be the oldest student here. I've been taking lessons for two years now and I started when I was 58. I thought about it when I was 18 but my parents were not very supportive, and after that I got involved in putting myself through college, then fooling around with cars, then flying. My wife was the one to suggest it, which was a big surprise, and then it occurred to me that the chance may never come again.

I am trying to learn jazz and big band. It is much more difficult than I expected. My kit is a Yamaha Stage Custom Advantage. Everything is really muffled so as to avoid disturbing the neighbors.

Morning everyone. I'm new to this site as well. I'm from Peterborough Ontario Canada, I originally started playing at 14 on a cheap set of Pizie's befor gratuating to a set of Stewarts. I stopped playing at 22 when I got married and started having a family. Now at 52 I started learning again on a set of Pearls EXR. Getting aquainted with them is one thing....getting the timing back will be like riding a bike again.
