Default Gerald Heyward has riveted high hats?

Around 1:48 in the Gerald Heyward video "Brooklyn Snare Bass Hat" the cameraman does a close up of his high-hats.

What are those screws hanging off of the bottom hat? Are they rivets, similar to that of sizzle rides used for jazz?

Sabian have an AA Sizzle hat model, which has rivets in the bottom hat. Looks like Gerald's done a similar thing with those A Customs he's playing.

Yes.

While rivets are most often used on jazz ride cymbals, they can be, and occasionally are, installed on other cymbals as well.

Has anyone has any first hand experience with riveted high hats? His sound pretty good, but the rivets only come into play when the high hat is open correct?

I've played a set of 15" Sabian AA Sizzle hats for about the last 7 years. I love them.
There are 8 rivets--4 sets of 2 spaced around the bottom cymbal.

It gives the hats more presence and shimmer.

Played closed, the rivets don't do much, but any amount of opening sounds great to my ears.

The sizzle hats also have 2 holes in the bell which lets all the air out immediately, making them very responsive.

I picked up that Kick, Snare, Hat DVD a while ago, and there are a few "performance" clips where he's playing by himself. And he was using a set of 13" A custom master sound bottoms with rivets on the bottom and damn did they sound nice.

Amen to that.

Hm... He must've done a custom job on the A Customs. I'd do a little DIY if I wasn't so afraid of messing up my beautiful A Customs =P

I hear that, even taking it to a good metal shop gives me a weird feeling.

Has anybody ever done the holes and rivets with AAX studio hats, or can this process be done to any hats, will it ruin the sound?

I haven't done rivets in hats but I have done two half inch holes in a set like quickbeats and found no difference in the sound. These were Masterwork Jazz Series hats, 13 inch.
