Looks like it. Although Z custom sounds better than Z3 in my opinion.
What's the difference? http://www.zildjian.com/z3/ |

Yes, Z3 has replaced Z Custom. being that Z Custom replaced the original Zs, 'Z3' seems quite fitting, being that it's the 3rd generation of Z cymbals. Kind of funny that it's taken Zildjian 3 goes to get their hard rock/metal cymbal line right.
There are still a few Z Custom models in the Z3 line - the Dyno beat hats for instance still have the Z Custom logos. |

I think they went backwards with those lathing lines. I'm not too impressed with Zildjian's decision to change the Z's. I sure hope they sound better because they look cheap now. I think I'll turn to the "Dark" side and go RUDE. lol .....

Apparently the crashes are much more musical now, instead of just being manhole lids. To be honest I was never really a fan of the Zs anyway, so any change is good in my books.

Exactly. They were just way too heavy sounding. Just plain clangy.

They actually seem usable now, if you want an obnoxious cymbal that is

Actually I meant the name Z3 doesn't have as good a ring to it as Z custom.

I think you lot shouldn't diss so much on Z customs, they're really good if you're a hard hitter and you play loud music.

even though i'm a paiste player, i have owned a couple sets of z customs, and to say they arent musicial is just wrong (in my opinion, just like its your opinion they arent musicial) i agree the crashes are harsh, and so are the chinas. I however think the Z custom mastersound hihats and z custom power ride are amongst the best cymbals out there for their particular applications. I like crisp, bright chicky hihats, those are z custom mastersounds. I like nice deep ping ride cymbals with a cutting bell, that is definitely the z custom power ride and the mega bell works for that as well. when i had a zildjian set up, i mixed K custom dark medium thin crashes with the above mentioned hihats and ride (worked great ) Also worked great with A custom crashes/china. From what sound samples i have heard, the z3 power ride and mega bell are almost exactly what the z customs were minus the hammering patterns. I think they refined the crashes a lot which is what i think they needed.
I put the 22" z custom power ride up there as one of the best rides out there by any company for those who like a nice deep ping for hard rock and metal. Probably one of the pingiest rides by any company, however i like my 3000 rude power ride and signature reflector power ride (more silvery) just my .02 cents.

I know what you mean about the crashes actually they were a bit heavy, but i think the medium crashes are okay.

Tried out a few Z3 crashes last week. I like them a lot. I was a fan of the Z Customs, and these are way better sounding.

I have an old Z custom that I cracked in three spots (yes, it wasn't mine and I didn't know a thing about hitting cymbals back then) which I replaced the guy with a new one and kept the cracked one. I had the cracks cut out, and even though the exception doesn't say much for the natural cymbal, it sounds like utter garbage!
It has a doom-y china sound to it. Useful but ugly. |
