Sounds like a cool internship. Beats mine back when I was in college--reviewing, writing summaries, and filing government documents (not even top secret ones!). Enjoy the experience!

There are two rides I'd like to get your feedback on--the Vault Crossover and the new HHX RBDR. Love to see what you think.

I'd really like to hear some reviews on the HHX RBDR as well. I own the now discontinued HHX Dry ride and am curious how the RBDR differs. Perhaps you could track a Dry Ride down an do a comparison?

Hey guys, I just did some testing with both the HHX RBDR, and The Vault Crossover. Heres the blog entry I did this morning:

21” Vault Crossover Ride: I tested this cymbal upon request. Once again, I found my new favorite ride! Wow, I had no clue this ride even existed. I’m pretty sure it was the former Hot Ride. As far as jazz is concerned, this cymbal is the end all be all for me! Its un-lathed top has this dry effect to it, but the un-lathed bottom and dipped bow gives it this flutter effect that I’ve never really seen before. So it really gives you an opportunity to smack it senseless! I think this cymbal really fits a niche in be-bop or hard bop jazz. It’s great for that slam/swing thing that drummers like Elvin Jones, Max Roach, Roy Haynes, and Art Blakey did. I was really happy about the results I got out of this cymbal. The bell has a sweet spot which kind of turns me off about a cymbal, but this cymbal was an exception because the sweet spot was so sweet and loud when you hit it right. This is one bad ass ride cymbal folks!

21” HHX Raw Bell Dry Ride: This cymbal is just like the Rapper, Mr. KRS-ONE. Super RAW, to the point and on target! The bell is super loud, which was a huge turn on for me. No sweet spot exists on the bell because the entire bell is sweet! The hammer marks on the bell give it a beautiful touch. The bow is dry but not in the standard sense. Its decay is quick between hits and is very pingy. Personally, I would prefer this cymbal in a rock based setting due to the power you get out of the combination of the bell and bow. This cymbal wouldn’t have been my first choice, but upon request I soon learned to love it. I might otherwise not have touched it.

Thanks for the requests…..keep it coming!

Question: In the AAX crashes, there are two Medium-Thins: the Stage Crash and the X-Plosion crashes. Do these weigh approximately the same? Assuming that they do, the only difference could be the thickness profile. Can you describe what that is? Example: X-Plosion thicker toward the bell and thinner at the edge than the Stage (if true).

I think I may be leaving a Med-Thin out, but can't come up with what it was. Was it was 3 med-thins from another Sabian line...? I dunno.

Maybe you could ask the marketing people to drop some of the nebulous superlatives and include more technical info in their product descriptions. :D

The AAX Stage? Do you have any certain type of Paragon?

Yes, the AAX Stage. As for the Paragons, I would like to hear reviews on the hi hats, 22" ride, and the 18" and 16" crashes, if possible.

Thanks

Hello all,

Ok So I tried out the 19" AAX Stage, and The 19" AAX Xplosion along with an 18" Paragon Crash,

Here we go.....

18” Paragon Crash: I’m not the biggest fan in the world, but they do sound great! This particular cymbal was very bright. It kind of reminded me of the squeaky wheel on an old car. This cymbal didn’t annoy me, but it certainly stuck out. Its cymbal characteristics were unique in the sense that it spoke its own sound. It definitely breaks through the music, and the bell is killer! If you’re looking for a cymbal with bright, loud and heavy duty sounding characteristics, these are for you!

19” AAX Stage Crash: Super bright and piercing. Kind of a hard hit. Bell didn’t get my attention. Flutters and you can easily loose control! If you hit hard enough you could kill a cymbal stand, and I’m talking about you not just Liberty Devito! What does this all mean? Well for me, I love this cymbal. It’s so raw and bitter! It’s like waking up the beast and letting him out of the cage. Rock n’ Rollers, Heavy Metal Heads, and those who play all too aggressively, this may just have your name written all over it!

19” AAX X-Plosion Crash: I have to admit of the two 19” AAX cymbals I tested last night, this is my favorite. This is probably my favorite crash of any line. So much so I got one for myself. It’s very responsive. It responds right on impact. It’s not as bright as the Stage, but it has its own unique characteristics. It has an un-lathed bell that’s super raw and loud. It’s easier to hit and more versatile at that. It felt a little lighter so that it allowed me to smash away on it and have fun while I go nuts! It’s super powerful and looks beautiful in a Brilliant Finish!
