Default I love cymbals. I mean I LOVE CYMBALS!

I always liked the drums. But the thing that really hooked me for life in the very beginning (1969) was cymbal sounds. When I was 12, I thought I would die happy if I was able to do a fill, and end it by crashing on 2 Zildijan Cymbals at once. I was ECSTATIC when I got my first 2 Zildjians, a 20" ride and an 18" crash. $42.00 and $36.00 USD in 1971. There's an old home movie of me at Christmas opening them and really I look like I'm gonna wet my pajamas. Yesterday I was on the prowl for a nice big crash. OMG I found a magic crash. It was hidden behind the counter at my local GC. It's a 20" Sabian AAX X-Plosion crash, brilliant finish. Normally I'm not a fan of those specialized cymbals, like Projection series and the like, but wow was I floored by this thing. I can't stop thinking about it. It's fairly thin and shimmers like nothing else. I gotta say Sabians are slowly becoming my preferred tone for cymbals. This new one sustains for like 15 seconds, (which I LOVE) and it opens up really easily. The bell is nice and big and is everything a bell should be and more. It makes a great washy sound when it's ridden, perfect for a lot of stuff I do. I went to sleep last night thinking about playing it next. I LOVE CYMBALS! Can anyone relate?

I don't think you're alone in being a cymbal nut. I know I am. I am far more picky about my cymbal playing than my drum playing.

Yeah, I know next to nothing about differend drums, woods, heads and stuff, but I'll readily talk for hours about cymbals with anyone interested. There's magic about them.

I think this is shared by many drummers. The cymbals i think just are a lot easier to hear the differences, but more than that i think we tend to have bigger preferences simply because i suppose you don't have to buy a whole set of cymbals, you can pick and mix them individually as long as they still sound good together. So we can afford to be a bit more picky in terms of sound. I think i would be happy with most sets of drums as long as they were the right sizes and tuned well with the right heads but cymbals, they're different. They have to sound just so.

It might also have to do with the choices and how easy it is to change without spending a ton of money.
Once you get your drum set, thats it. Unless you want to buy a whole new drumset which is pretty expensive. But cymbals. You can change or add them without emptying your entire bank account. Trading, buying and selling. Its easier with cymbals than drums and thats kinda fun. Cymbals are great!

And not just any cymbal. I could strike 50 cymbals and only like 2 will appeal to me. I always go for the really finely lathed cymbals, they make the sounds I crave. I love hearing cymbals hit in such a way that you don't hear the impact as much as the swell about a second later. That really gets me off. It's so much easier to get a good cymbal sound than a good drum sound. You never have to tune them, buy heads for them, lubricate them, and they always deliver, always. I just love cymbals so much. When I was young I always used to imagine being in a band, and doing just a cymbal solo. I've never done one yet. I guess it's high time.

I feel the same way about my (ever growing) Paiste collection. I've sold drums before to pay for other things. But I can't bring myself to get rid of my cymbals. There's magic in those bronze discs !

It's true I get a little worked up, but this doesn't happen everyday when you come across a cymbal that is THE exact sound you are after. I don't want it on my home set for my son and his friends to bash about on, so I put it with my gigging cymbals and Thursday night I get to pull it out and play it in front of a mansion on a river at sunset and I am so looking forward to it. I could just use that one cymbal and be covered. It's my Nefertiti. Mmmm....Nefertiti

Just happened to me - I took home a 19" Sabian Fierce Crash (one of Jojo Mayer's signatures) and WHOA, exactly the sound I was looking for! Nice buttery feel, opens up huge, easy to control with great crash/ride potential and just a hint of some oriental trash.

Man, I'm hearing you on the Sabians, this pie just filled a huge hole in my sound that I didn't even know was missing!

I love cymbals, too. I love it more than beating the drums like what most of us here feels about it.

I love my cymbals.. one of the nice things about it are once you spend the initial cash to get a nice set, it's easy to make small upgrades or add without killing your wallet.

I don't know, there's just something about them...
