Lutz, I am glad my books are helpful.

Please send my best to Hans F.

Thanks for clearing that with JoJo John! I'm glad I went with the right thing allthough I honestly was only guessing...

Your books are more than helpful. These books with all the great examples, quotes and pictures really got me started and interested not only in drumming but also in all the great drummers and even more their music.

John, since you're looking in this thread, I have to ask you this: I tried to transcribe some stuff by one of my favourite drummers: Bill Steward. But really... compared to transcribing JoJo, trying to understand Bills playing is just much more complicated to me. I don't even know which rudiments he uses to get a starting point in understanding his playing. What's even "worse" is his phrasing and the rhythms he uses - for most of the time I don't have the slightest idea what he is doing and how he must be thinking (about form / rhythm) or where his ideas come from.

So any suggestions to understanding Bills playing would be great. Since you've transcribed a lot of Tony Williams, Elvin Jones and all the other greats, maybe you've got some good ideas to share.

Thanks everybody for your interest and words!

This is a great thread....

The transcription from SR (Lutz) and the exchange of opinions between Masterdrummer John Riley and Lutz and also the clarification from Jojo himself. Very appreciated.

John Riley here:

Hi Lutz,

Perhaps I can help with the Bill Stewart stuff but first you should check out the many clips of Bill here and on youtube. His playing is very sophisticated but he does repeat some similar material in different solos.

Best,

John
