Hi Polly
I just got this one. Tama STAGESTAR, It's an older one as far as I can tell. Im trying to find out what year it is. 14x18 bass 8x10, 8x12, rack toms 12x14 floor tom 5x13 steel snare I haven't replaced the stock dented heads from the novice player that owned it yet. I ordered them. I haven't had time to clean/shine it. When I change the heads I'll detail it. I made a 2" riser for the 18" bass drum. It works great! The kit is in great condition. It will polish up like new. It sounds and plays excellent! Great tuning range. I can't wait until the Aquarian SK II and the black Tama logo heads arrive for the bass drum along with the new Aquarian Studio-X coated single ply tom heads. Update; the last 4 pics are with the new heads installed and the kit cleaned up. I put Aquarian Studio-X Coated heads on the tom batters and SuperKick II on the bass along with a Tama black logo head. Im lovin this kit! It sounds wonderful! I really like the tone of the toms and the 18" bass. I read that this was a desirable low end kit because of its sound, but I never realized just how good that it would sound! I have played drum kits that cost tree times as much that didn't sound as good. If you find a Tama Stagestar, Buy It!

Cruz, is that really an opalescent finish on your kick or a trick of the light? McBike I think I've already salivated over your sparkle kit before (mataphorically speaking) so no need to do it again :) |

I don't know how one dents heads like that! I have only put a small dent in a head every now and then when something heavy fell on the drum. Perhaps he was using two pound ball peen hammers for sticks! Im glad that the kid who played the kit didn't hit the shells or the bearing edges. This kid needed triple ply heads!

I think it comes from banging real hard on very loose heads.

It also comes from stock heads. I swear those things tend to be Diplomat weight.

Hey Everyone
I just found this thread but I've been into the tiny/mini/jungle kit for a couple years now. It started when I stumbled on a "Groove Percussion" 4 pc that a guy was selling with some nice cymbals. I just wanted the cymbals. Then I found out this Groove Percussion kit was actually a rebadged Yamaha Manu Katche kit sold only by Sam Ash. In fact the snare is exactly the same as the Yamaha 12" Musashi SnareWhen I played it, it was one of those WHAT??? moments. Couldn't believe it. The 16x16 kick blew me away and the overall sound just hooked me. I looked over at my Gretsch 6Pc Renown Walnut/Rack system and thought "wow maybe I DON'T need to break that thing down all the time" . Anyway it's great and since then the Gretsch is gone, which really hurt, but kept the little Groover and added a 4x14 Pearl Maple Snare and just converted a 18x18 Pearl Maple Tom to my new kick and added legs to the 16x16 for a monster floor tom. Now if I need a bigger sound for Funk or Big Band it's there or scale it back down to a tiny 3 or 4 pc as needed. Never needs more than 2 stands even with all my cymbals and hanging 13" tom. Heres a pic of original and one all grown up.Drums:18x18; 16x16' 13x13'10x7;12x5 Snare'14x4 Snare' Cymbals: 10 Sabian HH splash;13" Zildj. That's pretty tiny, Philly. Hey, that cat can really play!
I might have to revoke my membership to the Tiny Kits Club. I recently added the 8" RT tom to the 12". Two toms and a djembe ... at this rate I'll have a Terry Bozzio type kit soon! |

How small of a drum could you use for a bass drum and still get some decent sound? I know jazz/practice kits usually use an 18" or 16" diameter, and alot of people convert 16" floor toms for bass drums. Would a 14" dia x 16" deep floor tom be too small? I am thinking mainly for practice in small rooms or even gigging in acoustic settings in smaller clubs/settings.

A low bass sound is hard enough to get from a 16" drum. I guess that you could mount a pedal on your 14" tom and experiment. The 16" depth may help a bit. Why not give it a shot and see how it works. You can also mount your pedal underneath your standing tom like Cocktail drum kits. A Cocktail kit bass drum pedal may be the best answer for you if you plan to use a 14 inch tom. Your floor tom and your bass drum will be the same drum! If you notice, A real deep 14 or 15" drum is used on the Cocktail kit. http://www.walmart.com/ip/GP-Percuss...i_sku=10975383

Cute kit, GD! What cymbals are you using?
DMC, I reckon 9 pieces is stretching the friendship a bit but your kits always look so good it would be wrong to deny the thread that kind of drum porn. My kit's getting huge too - 12" hats, 16" crash, 17" crash/ride, snare (with cascara), 16" kick, 12" tom, 8" tom ( I have the toms set backwards) and a djembe. I've pretty well disqualified myself from a thread I started! Hey Khan, is that the setup you used on Black Halo? |

I will be using the ones from my other kit. A Zildjian A 19 inch crash for a ride/crash and my 13 inch Masterwork Jazz series hats.

GD - I am loving that bumblebee kit! What make are the drums and did you finish it yourself?
Pol - No, I wish I could say yes, but I used a Keystone era Ludwig (in the studio already), I think 20,12,16 and a 14 snare and my 19" Agop Sig Istanbul ride, 16" AAX Dark Sabian Crash and some Ufip hi hats and a broken Zildjian A custom (was already in the practice studio) as the second crash/ride Cephalic - Lovin the setup and the rocking out picture! (Are you alone on stage...?)

The drums are a Taye Studio Maple snare, a Pearl Forum Bass drum/converted tom, the 12 inch is a Ludwig Rocker, and the 13 inch tom/floor tom is a Pulse. A , or United Nations kind of kit . Like this forum, a little bit of everything. Cymbals will be a Zildjian A 19inch crash for a ride/crash and some 13 inch Masterwork Jazz series hats. I did the re-finshing and they look much better from afar.

Wow a real frankenstein! It looks great, you did an awesome job re-finishing it. Did you have someone do the custom bumblebee head?
For the bass drum/converted floor-tom, what are those lugs you have and did you simply have to put them on both ends and then do some drilling for the legs or was there more to it? Do you have a construction thread on this one?

I bought a kit that included spiked legs that go in the floor tom mounts, a riser for the pedal and a rail mount for putting a a tom on the bass drum. I used that to mount the cymbal. The Bumble Bee for now is just a cut out fro the web until I can get it painted on. I also bought the wood hoops, claws and t-rods on ebay.

That is so inventive! *applause*
Please tell more about: 1. The sound of the flat kick with suitcase resonator 2. How you got the fittings on the case. The audiences must crack up when they see it :) |

Heya Polly,
Thanks for your feedback! I've posted a thread specifically for the suitcase kit here if you'd like to see a few more pics and a vid. We re-inforced the inside of the suitcase with some aluminium, and bolted the pearl mounts on to the suitcase that way. It's solid as a rock to play, and is heaps of fun! I had my first gig with it here in the Queen Street Mall, and it attracted alot of attention, i'm going to re-wrap the shells in red, and but a little port in the front for a mic, but it sounds pretty good for what it is!!

Good idea to get everything to match, Trop.
It was hard for me to gauge the sound of the kick from the recording because the recorder was set to "tinny" :) So that's an RT drum in there? What size is it - a 14"? Funny thing about RTs - they can sound a bit thin acoustically for rock but they respond really well to being mic'd up with the right EQ. |

Heya Polly,
You're right, the recording doesn't really do it much justice, but i'm thinking of putting a PZM mic in there as it's a contact mic, it should pick up all the bass frequencies. Yeah, it's a 13" Rack tom that i've cut in half, the other half is my "floor tom". I didn't have to cut the 8" down, but I thought i'd keep it uniform with the other tom. Will show some pics when it's been re-wrapped. Thanks for your questions!
