Out of the options you mentioned, here would be my suggestion, in order...
1. Yamaha Tour Custom 2. O.C. Avalon 3. Tama Superstar 4. Gretsch Catalina ...notice I left one off? I would also hesitate to put the Catalina on there, but I don't know what style of music you're playing. I liked the Catalina Jazz kits, but not so much the rock and mod kits. Something about them just didn't "sing". Also, I would rank the Tour Custom quite a bit higher than the Avalon. If this were the Olympics, and these kits were ranked on quality for the price the Y.T.C. would get an 8.8, the O.C.A. gets a 7.2, Tama comes through with a 6.7, and the Gretsch (Mod) just makes 4th with a 6.0. The ddrum faulted... For $800 to $1000, look to the used market for a high-quality kit! THAT gets a 10.0!!!

hey,
i've been playing a gretsch cat club mod for about a year, now. i like the kick, but that's about it. the FT is a decent one, but a little shallow. i'm going to piece together a kit, and i'm keeping the BD, that's it. Look elsewhere, i'd say. always loved yammies... |

I've heard quite some Tama Superstars and they are awesome. A really good kit and I love the TAMA roadpro hardware that comes with it. It is just indestructible! (And heavy...)
You'll love the sound of that kit, I'm sure! |

Check it out...
Ddrum maple set or dominion AMX Orange County Avalon Gretsch Catalina... All the same kit, made in the same factory in China... Go to a GC that has all 3 in stock and check out the hardware. Tom Mounts, Hoops, Snare throw-off, bass drum spurs... They are ALL exactly the same kits. Anyway, out of what you listed I would go Yamaha Tour Custom or Tama Superstar. Both are well made, really good hardware and a fair price for what you get. The Tama even has die-cast hoops :) If you are cool with looking into other brands check out the Peace D-N-A Series kits. You can get one for around $800 online with hardware, and they are top notch. I toured with one of these a few years back. The hardware is rock solid, and the shells are better than anything you listed. http://drumnetwork.com/store/dna.htm |

So what? It's what he plays and prefers, regardless.

Ddrum and tama will work fine. I have both and I'm not disapointed in any way.

Of the choices with one addition I would recommend in this order:
1)Yamaha Tour Custom 2) Yamaha Stage Custom (not one of the choices would should be) 3) Tama Superstar |

I have a tour custom and it's a great set of drums, no hesitation there but still look for used kits, and also if you get the tour custom emperors (coated or smooth) are very nice on the drums!

I am porbably going to be alone on this but I would find a good, used maple kit from the 1980s. You will plenty of $ to spare.
