If you still have the stock head on there, then you're probably getting a real thin, ringy sound. Stock heads are always horrible, unless you get a real high end drum. Emperor X is definitely the way to go to get a deeper sound, especially with your snare being birch. Any brand of snare side should be good as long as it's the same 3 mil thickness. The High Energy is good too, but for me it's not as deep sounding as the emperor X. Maybe you should just get both, and throw in a Vintage coated emperor, which I'm really liking right now. Every snare is different, so different heads will sound better on certain drums than others, so you'll save your self alot of time just getting a few different heads to try.

thanks for the advice. havent had a chance to pick one up yet, been kinda busy with exams and stuff.

right now there is a coated ambassador which is fine, just too high pitched.

clear ambassador for snare side
