Which head size for trial?

When you've bought a head to try out, which drum do you buy it for? I don't know if I should buy for my 12" tom or 16" floor tom, or does it really matter that much?

Usually the smaller head would cost less...so if you are experimenting with
different heads why not start with less expensive way to go!

I like 12" for this as its the middle of the road and the costs are not that bad.
