Default Hydraulic Bass Front Head

On my 22" bass drum I've really been having trouble getting the tone I want out of it
I have an Aquarian head (not sure exactly what model but it has muffling) on the batter and an Evans Hydraulic on the front head
the sound that I'm going for is an open and somewhat resonant boom with a little bit of punch
the bass also has a pdp bass drum pillow in it (that I have taken out before and still didn't like the sound)
so what exactly should I do to get the sound I want??

Get rid of the Hydraulic on the front!! It is a 2 ply "batter head" I would say get an Aquarian Regulator for the front. You have a Hydro on the front, I'll assume you have a Super Kick on the back and a pillow in the drum. The combonation of the pillow and Hydraulic head is the reason you have a bad sound. If you get the regulator, you will get the sound you desire especially if you use the Super Kick 1. If you use the Super Kick 2, the sound will be more focused (dead)

If you use the Aquarian SK 1 and Regulator combo, it will give you the punchy boom that you want. As for porting the head, the Regulators come in ported and unported. I have the ported head. If you go unported, the drum will have a bit more sustain and the batter head will have a little more bounce. Take a look here for more details.
