The Zoom H2 and H4 recorders are excellent, as are the new Yamaha Pocketrak recorders. All produce good quality results with the built-in microphone sets and also have been reviewed positively in all the relevant publications.

I have an H4 and its advantage over the H2 for one is the XLR connectors on the bottom. I just recorded some stuff to get it tweaked in. I have used 2 overheads and I have used 1 overhead and 1 bass drum mic. Nice and handy. I will use the built ins next to get a comparison. If you can afford the H4 I would spend the extra.

I have an Olympus LS10 and am completely satisfied with the recordings it makes. $400.00 US.... The built in XY stereo condenser mics are a joy.
