Default My search has ended

Well, I am somewhat new to the forums here - I came a few months back when I started my search for a new kit. Since then I've been on here almost every day reading as much as I could... I've asked a few questions here and there, read reviews and opinions- soaking up as much information as all of you folks would provide - and I really started listening to different flavors of drums. What I was really looking for was a simple 4 piece, with a virgin 20" kick, 12" and 14" toms and a snare... but I wanted something a little unique - and of course I wanted all that for about a grand. I had been playing a Sonor Sonic Plus for 8 years on and off and decided it was time for something new... my band is hoping to record early next year and I wanted something that would shine. I tossed around ideas of Gretsch Renown Groove Kit (although price was an issue), a few used Keller customs like Phattties and even a used Pork Pie... but none of them really spoke to me. I really liked the idea of vintage, but I got lost in the years and years of different makes models and sounds....

Then I stumbled upon these for sale on Ebay - and couldn't believe my eyes.

I had read a lot about them - read every post about their construction - every decision Rob made about them. I listened over and over to the mp3s... I was astonished! I couldn't believe it! And to top it off, I was the only bidder - so I got a pretty darn good deal on them too. I still am having a hard time comprehending that I got an African Mahogany Unix kit in my budget.

They arrive next week, and I'm so excited. Now all I have to do is get my skills up to the level of that kit - must find the pocket! Wish me luck.

Tom

Well, I asked him the same question... since as I read through the posts it seems like he had it built custom for him earlier this year...

The answer appears to be two fold - 1) He's a bit addicted to buying and selling drums :)
and 2) As he explained in a few of his posts, he has a disability. It ended up being hard for him to manage these drums. They ended up sitting around his house not getting too much use. Ultimately he wanted something more compact and suited his needs more - so he had another kit custom built for him... smaller with some really unique hardware features that make it easy for him to use - quite awesome actually.

Yes, many of us have and/or know people with that affliction. Good to hear he's getting another custom. Francois is indeed one of the top North American builders. Great score for you. Give Rob my regards, if you would.

Nice to see that patience and research does pay off.

As much as I love my drums, I see a Unix kit in my future.

I can't believe you scored a used Unix kit. That's a holy grail here at Drummerworld. That's like saying,"I think I'll buy a barn to replace what I got." and ending up like this guy:http://www.intuh.net/barnfinds/

(Although apparently, it's an urban legend)

GN is Ghostnote. Site for drumbuilders. So you are the one that scotred the eBay Unix for 900.00. One bid on that set was really funny. I don't think enough people know about Francoise's drum yet. Rob had a buy now price of 1100.00 with no reserve so they went for 900.00. He sold the matching snare separately.

GN is Ghostnote... another forum. And as I understand it, he got banned here for saying something on Ghostnote.

And 10past10 - I know! I couldn't believe it... I was searching Ebay on a regular basis for "gretsch," "Pork Pie," "Keller" "groove," "jazz," "bebop," and "Custom" under "percussion" - just to see what I might find out there... One day my "custom" search popped this kit up and I fell in love. I had already read all about Unix on DW so I knew I was looking at a piece of art... and when I came to search for more info that's when I found the 2 threads about it's construction. I actually wasn't quite sure I was ready to buy a new kit - although I knew I wanted one - but I could not pass this up.

Thanks again for all the kind words - I'm so pumped!

Tom

Wow there's a kit I thought I'd never see more pictures of. Congratulations, I don't think you'll be dissapointed. I'm not entirely surprised that Rob eventually sold these, but I do remember when he finally got them. What a thread that was.

8 ply keller all the way around
12x18 kick
8x14 floor

Well THAT kit looks vaguely familiar! :)

I own a Unix kit and I can tell you...the sound and quality is second-to-none. You won't be sorry. I personally wouldn't have chosen the edges that Rob did for that kit...but to each his own.

Here's some history on your new kit:

Well, I did call first dibs on this kit when he sold it, but I'm glad it went to you tipk99. :)
Rob says to say hi to all from over at GN, and wishes he could defend himself on the reason for selling this beautiful kit. He really needed something super-portable and with him having less and less use of his right leg, he needed to be able to use either foot for the bass drum. He's eliminated his hi-hat stand and will have everything mounted, including an x-hat fot the hi-hat cymbals. Let us know when the drums have reached their new home with you tipk99.

Yes, Rob sent me pics of his new kit to post and explain why he sold the Unix too... I was just beat to the punch by Gruntersdad...

The new one he got seems pretty awesome, he even has a special snare stand modified from a mic stand. He seems really excited he'll be able to gig more easily with his new custom kit.

He told me he'd send some mp3s when he gets it set up...

Zambizzi - I'm interested in hearing why you aren't a fan of the rounded bearing edges... seems like more head contact would bring a little more of the shell sound to the set... seems to me it would be more muffled sound, but a warm woody tone. And from hearing the mp3s he posted (In the ebay ad in addition to here on the forum) I really liked the sound.... still I love hearing other peoples opinions, so lay it one me!

And yeah, I've read that history like 3 times full through already... I'm excited!

Well, IMO the rounded-over edges dampen the sound of the drum quite a bit. Yes, you'll bring more shell into the sound but that will dampen the attack and some of the sustain...giving you a more "mellow" sound. As I recall, that's exactly what Rob was going for...more of an "old school" sound. I like good 'ol 45's myself.

However - I'm sure you'll get whatever sound out of those drums that you're after and being stave...you'll naturally get more volume, overtones, attack, etc. I'd take your kit over any ply kit...now having gone through the "stave experience"! In fact, if I were a rich man, I would have bought those drums from Rob myself.

Good to hear that Rob's doing well, and nice to see that his drums went to a good home. Being that Rob is drumming with a disablilty, I feel there's no need for him to defend why he sold the Unix kit. I'm glad he's found a kit that suits his unique demands.

And for Tipk99, I still marvel at your score. Well done. Well done, indeed.

I asked this question a while back in its own thread and the story I got was that he got banned from Drummerworld for comments he made on Ghostnote. It was also, very wisely suggested that my inquiry die a natural death so as not to conjure up a heated debate on whether he should have got banned. So...

Update if anyone cares:

My drums were supposed to be delivered today, but no deleveries due to the really, really terrible weather out here in Seattle... UGH! So hopefully sometime in the next week they'll arrive.

But in the mean time, Rob (fourstringdrums) has gotten his new kit all set up. Here are some pics and audio... Really sweet setup!

I have an mp3 oo... but I don't know how to post it.

Man, poor Unix. I remember a while ago he said one thing that he would never want to see if his drums on a site like eBay.

But, luckily for you and him, it's an amazing set and hopefully you'll show the same love.
Treat that kit well, and it shall treat you well in return.

I myself almost baught a Unix kit, but after getting off tour all the expences ran me out dry.
