Default genera snare head... removing overtone ring.

so i went and bought new heads and snare wires for my 70s gretsch cob.
the snare had hd dry / amb
i bought genera / hazy 300
somehow it had less overtone after the change.

i wanted coated g1 / hazy 300 but they were out of 14" g1s.
the genera is the same as the g1 but with the 2 mil overtone ring.
is there anyway i can just cut it off without damaging the 10 mil head?

The edge is rolled under the aluminum rim with the other ply but you should be able to cut it close enough with a small pair of scissors like the kind for nails etc. That would remove most of it. I did it on my Taye stock snare when I first got it,

If you were unhappy with the genera, you should have waited till they had the g1's in stock. You shouldn't rush just because you wanted a different snare head. Unless you NEEDED a new head...

and i did need a new head. the ones on there were in bad shape. i didnt think the overtone ring would make too big of a difference.

Taylor said he had the HD Dry before, and he wanted to change...
I don't know how your rings a lot, I have it too and it's as dry as portuguese dust. Very good for a solid rock crack, but I also find it a bit too dry at times.

A little late with the reply, I guess... I did the same about 10 years ago with a Remo P3 that came on a Legend snare. snipped the muffle ring as close as i could to the metal hoop, and it sounded just like a coated Ambassador.
