Just recently banging away on all kinds of kits myself and i gotta say was NOT impressed with the X7 kit, it just didnt sound very good! If you can swing a couple extra bucks, check out the Mapex Mbirch - very nice sounding and a free tom!
Good hunting!

I had an opportunity to play one of these briefly at my local Guitar Center and thought it was a pretty good sounding kit. There are those that will site the shell material as being inferior because it is made of poplar, but all things considered, I believe they were offering a 7 piece set for around $700 which made it a nice set up for the money. If you are open to any other suggestions (I know you are asking specifically about the Pacific), might I recommend the Gretsch Catalina Maple (6 piece, maple shells, similar price), or the Mapex M-Birch as someone else has already. One last thing to add, I am not sure of the set I played had the stock heads on it, which will make a significant difference in the sound. But my suggestion, go play them all and have fun doing it.

I have not played the X kits but I have played and gigged with the CX kit and I loved it.

I used to gig with a CX too, and performed really well. My dad has a set of Pearl Exports (which have 100% poplar shells just like the X7's), and since poplar is slightly softer and less dense than other woods like maple and birch, they don't have as much attack and hi-end articulation as the all-maple CX's do. Some players (including you) might actually prefer this, so I would suggest playing as many different kits as you can and letting your ears be the judge(s).

I have recorded with these X7s and Im here to say that they are fabulous sounding drums!
Poplar schmoplar. Great build, sharp as a razor edges, dw qc????? I give 'em a 8 outta 10 They got an 8 because I think that pacific HW is..well...subpar. DO check out the Mapex M birch. I'm playing on a borrowed kit right now and they are everything you'd want in a birch shell kit without the 4digit pricetag!

I played the X7 kit, and I thought it sounded pretty good actually, and way better than the price tag would lead you to think.
Like a high end Maple, no, but it sounded GOOD so, so what? Good sound is good sound in my book. And it's only 7 or 800 bucks too. It's just different sounding. poplar schmoplar as yamahahammer said. The finishes are done really well, and any hardware that's sub-par, well, it light years better than the stuff I started out on! If one of these X7's were used as a back line kit on a gig, I wouldn't be upset at all.

My next kit will be an X7 (golf course green, I think). I played on the orange kit at GC when they first hit the streets, and I was way impressed, although I will say that proper head selection and tuning play a big role here.

As with any kit..bad heads and a lack of tuning skills can make a 4k Pearl reference sound like poo! But heck yeah..slap some Evans EC2s on those X7s and spend some "q" time tuning 'em and pow! Great sounding kit!!!
