Default resonant heads losing tone

Do resonant heads lose their sound? I would think that they would sound good for quite a long time, years, does anyone here have any stories about them losing their tone? I don't.

No drum head of any kind will stay good for years. Not even months, in some cases.

Depending on how much you play, you CAN get years out of them. They're hardly likely to break or split.

But it's easy to not realize how much tone you lose out of not replacing them. Out of sight, often out of mind.

I was getting bummed about the tone of my boomy Tama Swingstars (not the new kind, the 80's version). Then I realized I'd gone a few years on the same resos.

I changed them out and it made a world of difference.

Yes, it's expensive. But you do one reso change per four or five batters and you probably will be okay.

Then again, I know one guy that pounds the stuffing out of his kits and he still has stock heads on a few of his drums. Crazy, but YMMV.

Anyone figured out a good ratio for this?

Yeah, anything that's stretched is going to lose its integrity after awhile. It becomes exhausted, can't do the job anymore. It's crapped out, done, time to throw it away.
Just because it doesn't get played on doesn't mean it's not getting used, you know.

I'd figure that you should change them every 3-5 batter head changes. I noticed a big difference when I changed out the original resonant heads on my 1970 Ludwig kit when I got it this last year. BIG difference!
