well, they are different woods, and different sizes..
which sound are you looking for? the Gretsch is mahogany, and has a bigger kick. the Mapex is Maple, and has a little smaller kick. no to the pdp and ddrum. i would personally go with the Mapex. they are maple, and a better value IMO. nothing against the gretsch. but that is what i would do. a 24" kick is easier to haul around too =P and, if you are wanting them for metal, i wouldnt want a 26" kick to play metal with, so there is another reason... and are you sure that you want a 1 up, 2 down config. for metal? yes I def want a 1 up 2 down setup cause I play better that way.
I'm looking for a real powerfull kick and good sounding toms (preferably kinda low) I don't play metal but am looking for a metalisch kinda sound, I play a punk/hardcore band and need a real powerfull and strong drum to take around on gigs and so. Maybe any other sugestions in the same price range ? grtz. drobbo |

For the Catalina , you'll have a more resonant and low tone due to the 30 bearing edge and Mahogany shells. Go for it if it's what you're looking for. Catalina's are great kit for the money, For the Mapex , you'll have a more punchy sound and little bit more med frequencies due to the 45 bearing edge and Maple. Great drums too. For the music you play I think the Mapex is a better choice.

Whatever you do...I suggest you don't get the Catalina Club set...I had a buddy who ordered one of those kits, and it was a big let down, so he sent them back. Not only were some of the lug threads screwed up, but the drums didn't produce a great sound. (sounded more like toys) I guess the lug threads are just a sign of quickly, and poorly made hardware...something Gretsch should consider. HOWEVER, I doubt that ever Catalina Club Mod set has this problem haha...so if you do however buy the Gretsch, hopefully they rock set won't have this problem. Good luck!

I've always seen the Catalina Club kits in Guitar Center / Sam Ash for exactly the same price as online. So in that case, I would recommend if you're worried about quality control or getting the kit you want that you just go to your local music shop and pick it up.
I'll second the Catalina Club. When I was buying my first kit, I _almost_ got the Catalina. I was looking at every kit and I kept coming back to it because it thundered and boomed every time I hit a drum. It was to the point that I thought there must be something wrong with it for the price to be so low - I just couldn't figure out what. But I ended up getting a used Yamaha Maple Custom instead; I'm looking to get a Gretsch bop kit if I ever build a drum room. |

If maple is what you want look for Gretsch Catalina Maple on ebay stores. I am not sure where, but a friend of mine bought this kit new WITH hardware for 580.00 on an ebay store with Ebony satin-looking laquer finish. Tis beautiful.
But I would go with the Mapex if you choose not to do what I suggested. |

My recomendation....depends.
Is live performance or harder rock applications your main focus? -Then I would actually go with a DDrum Dominion Ash Dorian or a DDrum Dominion Dominator if you want 26" 14" 16" 18". I have played both, and used a Dorian at 3 shows. They mic up incredibly, sound great and are very rock solid. The snares are incredible! They tune up and pop, great cross stick and a huge tuning range, but they do like to be a touch on the tighter side. The two things that I would do if I purchase one: replace ALL heads and replace the floor tom legs with something a little more sturdy. If you want to be really picky, put Pure Sound snappies on it. If studio work or lighter applications may be in the future -Mapex all the way. This is not to say that they will not hold up to harder applications, but I like diecast hoops when I am really swingin. They are warm, very well rounded drums. Everyone that has them swears by them, for the most part. They have second to none customer service and they work hard to ensure that their products are great. I am not a fan of the Pro M snare though....so potentially look at switching it out for a Black Panther if you can afford to. I had a Pro M in these same sizes and loved it. The finish was super, and it was very versitle. Hope this helps some. |
