The problem is that when I put two toms on the stand, the clamps don't get tight enough to keep the toms from swinging side to side. It's tight enough to keep the toms from sliding down the post, but won't secure them laterally. The end result is that the two metal tom mounts rest against each other. It causes no noise (yet), but I'm concerned that this could eventually scratch up the mounts. Any thoughts? |

If so, the new style tom brackets with chrome wing nuts hold much better. Replace the old brackets with the new ones and sell the old ones on e bay. I just upgraded some of the brackets on one of my kits. It was a break even, money wise, once I sold the old style brackets. Also, use memory locks on the L arms. HTH

I was looking on DW's website for photos of these mounts, and discovered that the new DW mounts fit around the lug mounts rather than the lugs. Since I don't have DW lugs, that new one won't fit. Is there another model that I'm not aware of? Memory locks are a good idea, though. I'll look into them. Harryconway, you mentioned Yamaha hardware. Don't the new Yammie mounts punch small holes through the shell? I'm not keen on that. |

Look into RIMS mounts. They mount to the tension rods.

The DW posts are significantly larger in diameter than some other companies' posts. I wonder if the previous owner replaced the ball-and-socket L-arm with a generic brand that is too skinny for the DW clamps...???
All I know is that I can't mount my DW toms on a Gibraltar tom mount post, so I had to replace the L-arm part (the ball part of the ball-and-socket) with a DW one. Works fine now.

I have RIMS with Yamaha tom mounts attached to them. I hate L-arms. With the experience of my Yamaha Recording Customs came my "moment of clarity" with Yamaha hardware. Since mostly I play vintage drums, it's a simple enough process. Remove factory mount, RIMS mount drum, hang on Yamaha hardware. When drums get sold, factory mount gets re-installed. I keep the RIMS and Yamaha. I've had bad luck with Tama, Gibraltar, DW and Sonor L-arm's, enough to never want to go back.

I have some DW arms lying around somewhere, I think. I'll have to go digging and see if they're as thick as I remember. If I can't get that to work, I may end up wrapping the posts in electrical tape. |

Electrical tape will not work, You either need to get new L arms that are larger or new tom mounts that are smaller. There are plenty of on-line drum builders suppliers that carry both products.
Drum Parts: http://www.amdrumparts.com/ (they also build complete kits) http://www.precisiondrum.com/index.html (they also build complete kits) http://www.vintagedrum.com/category/...are-Drum-Parts http://www.drummaker.com/ http://www.drumfoundry.com/ (This site has great tutorials and building tools as well) http://www.percussiononline.com/drum...ssupplies.html |

Why do you think electrical tape won't work? The clamp itself is coated with rubber. Rubber against tape should work just fine, and the added width should help, too. Yes, the tape won't stick well against the rough metal, but it can't make it much worse, right? |
