Default Evans EQ4 little review...

Hi !

I just got tired of those EMADS heads that always
rattle with the muffling ring and decide to buy a Remo
Powerstroke 3. The problem with the PS3 is that the
head seem bigger in diametre and the wood hoop from
my Sonor cannot seat right (always at an angle). It's the
way they are built and I dont want to mod my hoop for Remo...
I tryed two PS3s from different dealer at different time (2006
and today) so it's not a bad batch...

Now my first choise was the Aquarian SK but nobody
got them in stock in Quebec. My last option, the EQ
from Evans...

So I got the EQ4, single ply they are, coated with the
beater patch. I cannot say that it's as warm and focussed
as the EMAD I or II, but now I can ear a boom from my drum.
The sound is not as dry and I can compare it to a mix of Bonham
for the "round" and a bit open like some modern jazz setup...
When I'm 20" feets from the bass drum, I can ear and feel
a loud punch in the chest and the attack is well present. No
muffling for now, maybe an eq pad or the DW pillow for hard
rock but for now, I love it...

The pedal feel is great... was a bit dead with the EMAD when
tuned med low... The feel is way softer than the EMAD so if you
like firm bass drum head, it's not for you.

Birch kit with 20" x 17,5" bass drum / front EMAD w/out muffling.

Thanks for reading !

Philippe

I've experienced the same thing on a Ludwig kick with two different PS3s. I've run Aquarian and Evans heads on that kick and they mounted up fine so I know it's not the shell. The PS3s sound great, but fit really poorly. Sometimes I worry that it will warp my hoop. It amazes me that a company like Remo would put out such an ill fitting head.

Cool review. I just bought one to replace my clear PS3 on my new kit. I will also use a clear Evans patch like you did.

Those Remo heads are garbage indeed. Mine too did not fit my kick properly.

I just got a set of Renowns with a 24" kick, which comes w/ the EQ4 Clear batter. It's excellent! I've been a die-hard PS3 guy for a while now but this head has it beat in both feel and sound.

And, yes, best of all...it actually fits a bass drum properly. Rarely have I gotten a PS3 that does, which has caused me a ton of trouble.

'Tis my favorite drum head for my kick so far!

I use Evans EQ4 batter heads on every one of my bass drums, both 22" and 20" sizes and without muffling.

This is the first I've heard of PS3s not fitting properly actually...

I don't remember having trouble with mine... Maybe I got lucky? I've thought about trying the EQ4 instead anyways, next head change.

i have exactly same problem with remo heads on my vintage 18 slingerland bassdrum, but in the same time i have problem that my wood hoops do not fitt properly on head so i can not 100% confirm if this is proble only with remo.
