Default Ludwig Vistalites find new home

A week ago Saturday, my wife saw a garage sale ad in our local paper. It was a fund raiser for a church down the street from us. The ad listed a drum set, no mention of age, brand, or sizes. She told me, "What the heck, it never hurts to look." We get there and everything is out in the church parking lot. I didn't see anything closely related to drums, so I figured they were already gone. I found the church pastor and asked if the drums had been sold yet. He said , no, they were still here and that I was the first person to inquire about them. He said that they had been donated to the church quite a few years ago and were taking up space in the music store room. He told me they were set up inside the church in the foyer, and to go take a look for myself.
I walked in and my jaw just about hit the floor ! There in front of me sat a 70's era Ludwig Vistalite 6 piece kit in the "Tequila Sunrise" rainbow pattern.
There were no cymbals or stands with the kit, except for the snare. The toms were missing the bottom heads and counter hoops, but best of all it had the matching snare drum.
We agreed on a price and I picked them up this past Thursday night. I'm going to take them apart, clean everything and start the hunt for the missing parts.

Here's the sizes:

Snare: 5 x 14

Mounted Tom: 9 x 13

Mounted Tom: 10 x 14

Floor Tom: 16 x 16

Floor Tom: 16 x 18

Bass: 14 x 24

The first two pictures were taken at the church before I took them down. The last is at their new home in my garage. I'll post pictures after the restoration is finished.

Also, any help on finding parts and tips on restoration from you fellow :Luddie" owners would be very welcome.

Nice find.
Moral question; did you let the pastor know the real value of the kit and give him a fair price or did you let those details go unknown to get a real bargain for yourself?...

I gave him a fair price. He knew that there were some missing parts and the kit needed som T.L.C.

Indeed, great find. Any parts that need replacing can easily be found on eBay. Somewhere in the archives LVDC did a wonderful tutorial on drum cleaning. I drove Vistalites for 25+ years. Great drums (especially for stage). Take care when you re-attach the hardware to the shells. Some people tend to tighten the lug and mount screws down like they're torquing auto wheel lug nuts. I think this is the main cause of "spider cracks", the not so common but always talked about ailment. Cool that the kit has a 24" kick. Boom.

Sweet. Looks like fate smiled on you. As far as any advice I have, I could only say toss that pillow out the kick drum. Good luck getting the missing parts, this is gonna be a killer set.

You lucky bastard. Most of those ads for drums end up being a 4 piece set of trash cans and coathangers and you score Vistalites. Unbelievable.

I like how the inlays on the kick hoops match the fade.

i see Ludwig parts on eBay a lot, so you shouldn't have too much trouble finding what you need there.

Dust those off a bit and that's a sick kit.
I really like the colours.
I'm hoping to buy an acryilic kit one day.
Have fun with those.

I would suggest using meguiar's plastic cleaner and polish (I think 16 and 17). I used them with great results on my vistas. I was not smart enough to take pics before I cleaned them, but they were hazy and dirty as all get out. I'm very happy with the results. Way cool kit by the way. I hope you enjoy them!

Wow! What a great kit!

I always thought those were cool....especially the ones in the same config with the Tivoli Lights in the '80 catalog.....

24" kick to boot, what a find...I think more than my jaw would have hit the floor :-).

Have fun!!

hwy154, nice Red Vista tom!

Thanks for all the great comments and suggestions. I have the owner of the music store here in my home town looking for parts in his back room. Here in the middle of nowhere, (Nebraska) you have to go 250 miles east (Omaha) or west (Denver) to get to a major city with more than one music store.
As I begin the restoration, I'll take pictures and keep everyone updated.

Here's some more pictures. I set them up so I could get some "before" shots of how they looked prior to being taken apart for the restoration. Enjoy.

Nice to see that there's a fellow HUSKER here on the forum. Are there any good music stores there in Lincoln, besides Guitar Center, that might have some old Ludwig parts stashed away in the back room? I work for The Nebraska Dept.of Roads and get to Lincoln on occasion.

If you're ever coming west to North Platte, let me know.

Music go round actually has an old set of Blue Vistalites, and the drum guy there collects vintage equipment, so you might ask him.
It's on 66th and O.

I will.
