Default Another Bass Reso Head thread

Im sorry everyone I know this must be the 100000000000 thread on something like this.

On my Ludwig Kit (22x16) I need to get a new reso head.
I know I want a coated or smooth white head.

Im partial to Evans so I was leaning towards the EQ3 either coated or smooth.

but Ive also heard of many people running PS3s on both sides of their kicks, with excellent results.
and since Im eventually going to be a PS3 batter I didnt want to rule this head out.

I know the PS3 also comes in either smooth white or coated,
but does anyone know if they come with the holes already in them like the EQ3?

and is there any real difference between these heads?

also what would you recommend the smooth white or coated?

thank you in advance for all your replies.

You might want to bear in mind that the Evans equivalent to the PS3 is the EQ4, not the EQ3. IIRC, the EQ3 is a 2-ply head where the EQ4 and the PS3 are single-ply.

I'm assuming you want the port because you play out miked? If so, fine, even if you can't find one already ported just get a Holz/Bass Drum-Os plastic ring--you use it as a cutting template in the installation process.

If you don't play out miked I recommend you not port the reso. You need all the boom you can get for the bass drum to be heard, and a port dries out the bass drum substantially.

I had totally forgotten about this thread.
thanks for the replies.

to drumtechdad;
the EQ3 batter head is 2 ply, but the EQ3 reso head is only 1 ply (7mil) with a ring.

Im still not sure which to get,

Do coated PS3s come in coated without the stripe?

Thanks, I was not aware of that.

In regular PS3s the answer appears to be no--at least a quick look at online retailers says so. I do know (because I have two) they make them as logo heads without the stripe. If you play Pearl, you're in luck; if not, you're not.
