Until today, sorry, I had no idea who you were. Another site had posted the tears of joy? video, great, best drum sound in the world. Now I see you are in Styx? Maybe I saw you play then at Casino Rama 2-3 years ago? The double bass overtook the whole stage, but it was awesome playing, just an over zealous sound guy. Is my friend Jimmy Johnson still guitar tech?

I don't think it's been released yet, but you can pre-order it off of Todd's website (I did yesterday). I'm in the UK and it worked fine, I just selected the International version so it should work for you too :-)

MaryO--

Thanks for the kind words! Hope you're having fun navigating through your lessons......always remember to have fun.

Mark S---

Thanks, man. I really appreciate your order and I hope you dig it. Thanks so much! Cheers.

Uniongoon---

I saw your youtube post. Man, it's hard to please you with bass drums now, isn't it? Well, the last time we played Rama was actually 5 years ago, and that over zealous sound guy was multi Grammy nominated Gary Loizzo, who's mixed the band for 15 years and recorded every Styx record since '77. And it's interesting because out of 1600 shows with personal guests at every one of them, I've never heard that complaint. Different strokes I suppose, and sorry it distracted from your enjoyment of the show. And yes, JJ has been in our crew for years. Great guy indeed. I hope you can check us out again and that you have a more positive experience. Cheers.

Cameo--

The DVD is not out yet, but you can order it right from my web store which ships to every country in the world. Just make sure you hit the International button. Thanks a lot!

lol, thats great, the Rama thing wasn't really a negative, I have been playing close to 40 years, the show was great, but when you hammered the double kick for a couple bar shred, I swear, it buried the whole band, grammys or not, well the system there is pretty smokin hi tech, and he was probably just puttin it through its paces. I loved it though .

I saw jimmy that night but not since, ask him about his date with the permanent waves model. Tell him Donny the drummer from ostaneks said hi. And yes i will come out again, Love gowan and was totally blown away by how technical all the Styx guys play in the live setting.

Hi Todd,

Just a quick hello and congrats on the release of M&M2. I plan on picking up my copy very soon. Your first DVD was great or should I say IS great. Every time I put it on I am able to pick up something new. I try to apply some new ideas into my playing, although it may be something as simple as accenting 2 & 4 on my hi hat for a particular groove, when I listen back I am amazed at the difference. Sometimes is does not work :-) but have yet to cause a real train wreck LOL with the band.

Thanks for reaching out to the drum community and helping us become better players.

Figured you may need some help with the Hydro bill in that beautiful house, so I bought your methods and mechanics DVD today, That Masterworks kit definitely influenced the purchase a little lol.

Watched first 2 hours of first disc, what a great teacher you are, I see and understand everything you do, you opened my eyes to the mechanics of some of the flam combos that have always went over my head, trying some stuff today, I have the mechanics, but realize even after playing as long as you have been, I am still painfully alot slower than I believed myself to be. Never too old to grow, thanks.

Thanks for the compliments, and thanks for picking up the DVD. It's great to get your feedback and it's truly appreciated! Hope it inspires some fun behind the kit.

I just posted the bit below in the gear form, but thought I'd post here too.
Thanks!

Hey guys,

I'm excited to announce something else that has been in the works for a while. Pete Stanbridge and I set out to create what we feel is the most personal, unique and exclusive percussion offering ever. It's the Todd Sucherman Signature Empyrean Stanbridge snare drum. I'm so proud to have teamed up with Pete, who is a master, and to offer a drum and package of unparalleled opulence. We feel this sets a new benchmark in creativity and quality. It's truly a collective dream come true, and for those interested in perusing the website, there's a lot to take in. Check out all the details included in the offering. We tried to create "snare porn" of the highest order! This is also the drum I use in much of the new "Methods & Mechanics II" DVD. Hope you guys enjoy checking it out.

Cheers from Pittsburgh,
Todd

Pretty pornesque indeed... wow! I'm used to pretty decent wood on my custom guitars, but this snare is really an astonishing beauty and as noble as it can get.

Being a bit of a builder myself, I have picked up a few things from the stanbridge site, thanks for that. I have never bought burl because it is very pricey to buy, even in raw form. And to get more than a few workable staves out of each burl would certainly be a challenge, this I think would explain a little why this model is considerably more than some of his other offerings. One of my favourites on his site though is the erosion snare, that is like nothing I have ever seen before.

Todd, there is a snare on your shelf similar in configuration to this one I built, (not quite complete here) it has darker hoops but is built in a like manner, can you tell me what that is?

Hey Todd

I am new to the forum and just wanted to let you know how much you have influenced me in my playing and approach to making music. I had a question to ask if I may?

Q: As my playing matures I am finding I like larger darker cymbals, thinner drum heads, and low to medium tunings. When you tune your drums with the clear ambassadors do you try for a specific note or do you let the drum dictate what its pitch should be? Also, when tuning a large set do you go for 5th's, 3rd's, etc.?

I am really looking forward to M&M II

Adam

Andy--

Thanks again!

Uniongoon---

Not sure which drum you mean. I have 8 wood hoop Stanbridge drums, 2 Ayotte wood hoop drums, and 1 Bearing Edge wood hoop drum. I think that one resembles the pic example you have. Bearing Edge was a company that fell off the planet years ago. That's a bubinga drum with Olive Ash hoops....if that's the one you mean.

Adam--

Thanks for your kind words. I tune entirely by ear, trying to find the spot where the drum wants to live, and sing best. The bottom heads are slightly tighter than the tops. I don't tune in registers between the drums...I just tine each drum where I feel they should be and it usually works out that they work together as an ensemble. It's pretty organic really. Hope that helps.

Cheers from the Austin inferno....

Todd

Thanks, and yes that was the one I meant, and you answered my other thought, Olive Ash, really nice colours on that. Great collection, in your DVD, I would of liked a little longer, 360 degree peak at your collection, but hey, you can't cover everything in one session, that was already five hours of material at half the cost most other artists charge.

Coincidentally, Bearing Edge came up in discussion over in ghostnote, some are saying he is re surfacing, there are two snares on fleabay right now, look really purty too.

Todd, the new video is truly a hit!!! The Mrs. kicked you out of the main house this time, didn't she????LOL!!! You have an aproachable and grounded way about you that makes me know you haven't forgotten where you came from. I loved the way you mixed the live STYX clips with teaching and everyday survival tips. The Quick tip guy seemed a little weak this time!!! All in all a great video that is worth watching over and over. Oh, and I did buy it!!!!

Got the M&M II DVD through today, now I just need to find some time to watch it properly! I've seen some of it though and liking it so far. The bit about checking hotel rooms made both me and my housemate laugh.

Anyway I think I know what I'll be doing this weekend inbetween practising, looking forward to it!

Hello Tod,

got both of your videos and id like to say:

1. Thx for the good travelling advices: i play drums but that's not my job, nevertheless my job makes me travel a lot around the world. While watching the video i found myself doing the same things in life :D
2. i use pro tools HD to record myself, and im trying to find a way to listen to myself with no delays while recording while at the same time using some fx, compression and eq to make make my ears enjoy the sound more (i play in a small booth with HP's on). Do u know any good rack preamp (not big mixers: there's no room in the booth :/) that has ""direct out" line outputs independent from the analog outputs that go into the AD converters like the big consoles have?

Thx a bunch
Stefano (Italy)

Todd,
would you mind sharing your max speed for some rudiments (e.g. paradiddle), handwork/footwork, hands & feet combos? I'm fully aware these are merely figures and not 'musical' but I'm just curious by nature when it comes to technique, and having the chance to post questions directly to you on this great forum is just irresistible.

Did you ever 'really'/separately practice double bass? (I guess so, that would be some explanation how you achieved this phenomental control and speed.) Do you remember some click settings?

What's your difference in max speed with right side vs. left side lead (if there is any)?

Drumming just has quite some physical aspect to it, especially if drummers have an energetic style. So to some extent speed is always there inherently. I'm just unclear _which speed_ can be done exactly (to shock myself and estimate the great gap what I can do and what the top drummers can handle).

Thank you for your reply, hopefully I'm not bothering you with these questions.

NeuralizerTY--

Thanks a lot! Thanks for getting it and glad you're enjoying. Thanks for letting me know. I really appreciate it!

Steste50--

Thanks to you as well. The problem you are describing is called "latency" and is a common problem. I wish I could answer your questing but I have an engineer who handles all that stuff for me, so I'm the wrong guy to ask. I would do an internet search on "Pro Tools latency" and I'm sure you can find many solutions. Sorry!

Arky--

No bother on the questions, but I really can't answer them. I've never really been interested in numbers or timing myself. Technique is a means to an end, and that end is saying something on the instrument. That is all I'm concerned with. If I'm using a click, it's to practice with it for a time feel--a groove---playing music. I do not use it as a measurement for physical endurance or to push speed boundaries. I have no interest in that whatsoever. I'm sorry to disappoint you but I have no answers for you regarding that stuff! But thanks for the kind words, man.

Cheers,
Todd

Hi Todd,

I posted a few weeks ago about the difficulty of getting your new DVD in the UK.

It finally appeared on Amazon, so I paid for it and sat back, looking forward to getting hold of it.

Then I was sent an email by Amazon, saying the DVD distributors in the USA had cancelled the order, for no apparent reason. My money is now in limbo, though I've been told it will drop back into my account in the next twelve days.

Clearly, this is all out of your hands, but maybe your managemant might want to chase it up, as I'm sure you've got a good number of fans in the UK who might be finding the situation frustrating.

You mentioned that your DVD was available from your website, but it's much cheaper and convenient to buy from within the UK.

Just checked Amazon UK and the DVD is again listed as unavailable.

Still hoping to get hold of it soon!!!

Cheers...

Supermac,

I appreciate you keeping me informed of what's going on with the DVD in the UK. I have forwarded your note to Hudson Music in the U.S. We'll see what they say. I'm disappointed that it seems to have had a problem in Europe and the UK. I had heard that an overseas shipment was lost....and maybe that's what's going on here.

As far as cheaper to buy within the UK, I'm not sue. With my site you're paying in US dollars which are worth squat next to the pound! I've shipped many copies to the UK, Europe, Asia....so it's an option to get it from my web site. Nonetheless, thanks for the information.

Cheers,
Todd
