Great drums. Did you buy them cherry or how did you come by these? I don't usually like drum sets in purple but these are great!!

I saw those for sale not long ago, somewhere, or the exact same kind of kit.
I really love it.

Wow, that's the first Slingy that make me drop my jaw on the floor. Really nice finish and the gold hardware add beauty & value to that kit. Very clean & classy.

I love it !

Specs of the kit & cymbals please :-)

How did I get them? Well, I played Slings back in the 70s and 80s, and got rid of my old set when I moved to a dry desert environment and the old animal-based glue shells started to delaminate. Picked up a set of Tamas (they are on here someplace) and played out with them. I always wanted to get another set of Slings, I just was looking for a more unique set than I was finding on e-bay. In essence, these drums found me.

This kit was being sold by Gabe Gonzales of George Clinton/P-Funk fame. He got them from Slingerland after they were built by Pat Foley for Prince, and Prince's drummer returned them to Slingerland when he lost his endorsement after the tour. They were in pretty rough shape, having toured with two bands and recorded with Gabe. They were just a set of drums, no stands or hardware of any type, and they were filthy.

I bought them, sold the Tamas and a set of vintage Pearls that I had planned to use for a specific roots blues band that I was going to gig with, and I commenced to return the Slings to their former glory.

After a ton of cleaning and polishing (the copper plate was green in some places), new heads and DW stands, a cymbal swap from the Tamas and the Pearls, they were ready to play.

I have a set of old A Zildjians that I use on them now (15" orchestral thin crash, 16" medium crash, and 18" crash, with a 22" ride) and a 14" set of Sabian Pro hats. Bass pedal and hi hat are Pearls, but I took an adjustable beater mount from a Tama Iron Cobra and put it on the Pearl pedal, so it's kind of a Frankenpedal. I like the long pedal board of Pearls, but I like to be able to adjust the beater angle, so there it is.

They record like a dream, and they look great on stage, going from purple to black depending on the lighting. Foley said he rubbed black stain into the grain and wiped it off before putting on the purple, which is why the grain looks so deep.

These are 10, 12, 14, and 16 toms, and a 22 bass. All are maple, the toms all have die cast hoops. Super easy to tune.

Man, this kit sure has a history behind it. I don't think I could add much more. It's rare you see drums like these that look just a little exotic but are extremely classy and just downright good-looking.

Funny, I'm not a fan of purple or gold/ brass, but the combination with the maple is absolutely stunning!

I never thought I would own a set like this- most of my other kits were pretty subdued, but this set just caught my eye, and with the history and the fact that it needed someone who was going to get it back in playing shape an d use it, not stick it someplace as an investment (I HATE that!) I was sold.

Thanks for the kind words.

Thanks, a few of you remember the set on stage with Prince or George Clinton. Gabe has pics that he is supposed to send me one of these days. Still, I like the drums regardless of their past life, but pics would be cool.
