Default New Mapex drumset. Pictures. Be jealous.

I've had the kit for about a month, it was shipped directly from the Mapex factory in China. It look a LONG 3 months of waiting but so worth it. The reason I had to wait was because I ordered my kit with Black Chrome hardware, which the factory does not reguarly stock, I was told. So my kit had to be assembled from scratch! :)

I also bought a new Pearl ICON curved front rack to house my junk. After assembling the kit, I could probably use an extension on the right side... We'll see. The Yamana Flying Dragon pedal is new as well.

The set is a 6-piece Mapex Saturn in the new "Studioease" configuration for 2008. Color is Root Beer Burst with Black Chrome Hardware. This kit sounds so warm and powerful, with the addition of 2-plys of Walnut inside on top of the 4-ply Maple.

10x8
12x9
14x14
16x16
22x18
14x5.5 (snare)

All came outfitted with Remo Emperor batters and Ambassador resonants. The kick has Powerstroke 3 on both sides. The snare is Ambassadors both sides. I'm not a humongous fan of Remo but they will do.. I'll probably slowly switch out to Evans or Aquarian as heads wear out.

Please enjoy!

Wow!! This kit is stunning. Great interesting set up that looks really comfy. I love the choices in cymbals. I think the thing I like best is the black hardware paired with a very subtle finish. It looks just plain gorgeous.

FLAWLESS!! Mission accomplished: I am jealous.

I had success with both Evans G2 over G1 (both coated) and Aquarian Super 2 coated over classic clears on my M birch. Not sure how the walnut ply in the Saturns will do with either of those heads, but my guess is fan-freakin-tastic.

That is a really good looking kit. Cymbal specs? How do the yamaha FDs compare to other pedals? (assuming you've tried other pedals before?)

Thanks for the info... I'm not sure which heads I will goto next from Evans or Aquarian.

I actually have two sets of SABIAN cymbals I use. But in those pics they are L-R:
14" HHX Groove Hats
10" HH Duo splash
17" HH Med-Thin Crash
18" HH Med-Thin Crash
21" HH Raw Bell Dry Ride
18" Signature Jia Chinese
18" HH Dark Crash

I recently changed them out for my other setup, I'll post a pic and specs soon.

HAHA.thanks. The grain pattern is horizontal in all of the drums. I think DW is the only ones with vertical grains on some kits.. I think it's called VLT or something.

They are definitely gorgeous, and I wouldn't mind playing them, but as long as I own my Gretsch Renowns, I won;t be jealous. Congrats on the great new set.

I could be jealous as well, but I also just came off buying the exact same drumkit but with the Antique Ivory finish. Neverthless, congratulations and enjoy that beautiful kit. You can check mine out here.

These drums look great. Keep tweaking and keep posting. I like the conventional look of the floor toms both to the right.

BTW how 'bout some fresh cymbal specs.

Thank you!

Yea, especially with a new kit with more toms than I have been used to in the past, I keep adjusting the positions to a comfortable location. I had the one floor tom to my left to open up more fill possibilities, and while great, I still found my body wanting to twist to the right for two floor toms.. so I moved it back to the traditional way... Maybe when I get some more dough I'll spring for a 16x14 or 18x16 floor tom or something for the left.

Typically I play an additional snare (piccolo) to my left, I might put that in there.. Plus it'll double as a table :)

The cymbals (L-R) are as following. They're all SABIAN's of course:

14" HHX Groove Hats
10" HHX Evolution Splash
17" HHX Prototype Dark Crash
10" AAX O-Zone Splash
21" HH Raw Bell Dry Ride
18" AAX Dark Crash
18" HHX Manhattan Crash
18" Signature Jia Chinese

When I play live with the band, I use a slightly fewer and different combination:

14" HHX Groove Hats
16" AAX Dark Crash
21" HH Raw Bell Dry Ride or 20" XS20 Medium Ride
18" AAX Dark Crash
18" HHX Evolution O-Zone Crash

Wow liking this setup even more than the first. Have to say I'm a big fan of the 2 up 2 down thing - just seems to flow more than having the 16" over the other side. Loving the cymbal selection, I'm really digging HHXs at the moment - I have this burning desire to get my hands on some stage or HHXtreme crashes. How does the AAX blend in with the HHX dark and manhattan crashes? Did you set them up decending in pitch or by some other method?

Any shots of the band setup?

Thank you so much!!! If I wanted to go REALLY ULTIMATE, I would also put my 16" AAX Dark Crash just above my hi-hats. I leave it off, cuz frankly, I don't have a stand for it lol. It stays in my gig bag and I use it at practice/shows.

The AAX and HHX go very well together, although all of them are Darks except for the Manhattan, but that is HHX to begin with so it's naturally "darker". I think if I had put something else in there like a AAX Studio or Stage, they'd be too bright in contrast with the rest.

The main reason I have the AAX crash in there (and physically) is because that's my "go to" crash when riding on it in choruses and such. It projects!

I don't setup my cymbals according to any particular method, however, the one thing I try to do is set them up in ascending size, from left to right. The exception is the splashes, I fit them in where appropriate, in any little space!

The one thing lately that has annoyed me is the coating on the snare batter is starting to come off, after 2 months!. I play with proper technique (ask Pat Petrillo!) and I think that REMO still has some lingering issues with QC on their heads. I'm going back to Evans the next change.

Yeah REMO coated heads seem to come off fairly quickly. I did a recording session not long ago and used coated ambassadors on the toms and after the session I noticed that the coating had already started to come off. Personally though I think Remo heads sound better than Evans, and the flakey heads aren't that much of an aesthetic issue.

Also I think you need to buy another cymbal stand haha, I'm sure that AAX Dark would fit in perfectly with your other crashes.

Everyone, thanks for the kind words!

FYI, I have a new Evans PC Rev Dot Coated head for my snare and one of those G Plus Clears for my 16" floor tom.. .want to try those new G heads out and see what they're about!

No particular reason other than it makes sitting down at the kit obviously easy, don't have to shimmy behind anyything.. Plus I can walk (almost) around the whole kit and adjust stands and clamps if I need to, without feel cramped in and in wierd positions lol.

OK, a Pearl rack extension for the right side and some cymbal replacements, this is just about my full kit I use... I need to get or modify my hi-hat clutch pole to be shorter so I can mount a 16" AAX Dark Crash right above the hi-hats.

I also will be requesting mics and stands for this Xmas, so I will be able to record my drums much better than my H2 (which works great though). Please enjoy.
