Is that a Pearl Export EX 16" floor tom in Jet black wrap with black hardware that you're about to destroy? Pity - it would have matched my set nicely :)

What are the plans?

Ha !

No, i'm just converting it to a bass drum to make a 10-14-16 set with my old exports.
So im just adding wood hoops, spurs, and rewrapping it.
I'll also put it's leg brackets on the 14" so that it doesn't have to be suspended to a stand.

I'm sorry, but I don't see the point in messing with those exports when you have that gorgeous new Unix set! I guess you can get a little experience with DIY projects and have a little fun with it, but if I were in your place I'd be playing my Unix drums right now. lol

I'm converting it for that exact reason, because I have the Unix.
I needed a small kit I could bring to extra humid places.

AND..

the exports were just sitting in my closet unplayed

AND...

I needed a goal to think of as I work or else I feel like quitting my job.

I drilled my 14" today for the leg brackets

And what color should I wrap the BD with ? (don't forget the hardware is black)

-rewrap it in black like the FT and TT ?

-rewrap it in black oyster, than rewrap the 10 and 14 ?

-rewrap it in miror gold, than rewrap the 10 and 14 ?

- sparkles ?

Yikes, not mirror gold. How about (as boring as it is) white? Pure class.

Ok i'm decided. It will be in a black sparkle. I think it will be nice with the wood hoops.

Nice decision. Just don't pick anything too subtle, I mean, it was already a black wrap.

You wrapping the hoops too or leaving them natural?

If you leave them natural, then matching wood hoops for the toms would look great. You can find them here:

http://www.champagnedrum.com/hoops.htm

This would probably mean raising the lugs a bit so that the tension rods clear the hoops, but I'm sure this can easily be done.

Actually, I decided not to use the wrap, i'm going to leave it natural

I'll sand it up to 600grit, than put tung oil on it.

and i'm not buying wood hoops for this kit, this is meant to be a compact cheap gig kit, and woop hoops are expensive.

Wait, I thought you weren't doing wood hoops on this kit? Either way, it looks great so far.

Oh i gotcha. I thought you weren't going for wood hoops anywhere, even on the kick where they're commonplace. Keep us posted.

Wow, that looks very beautiful! So you`re going for black hardware parts? Hehe...of course that would look nice. :-)

I`m excited to see the final thing. I can only imagine till now!
Mh, won`t you be sad if it looks better than your beautiful Unix? Better be careful with making the Pearl beautiful. ;-)

Default Re: Projects.

well it would have been done yester day but I ran into some problemes.

First, after drilling the holes for the spurs, I realized I lost the mounting screws for them.
Then, when I started putting the lugs back, I tried the hoops on and was going to tighten it but couldn't. The hoops are too thick for the lugs so I have to put spacers under the lugs.

And Karl, don't worry, this will never come close to the unix in beauty or sound :)
