Default What Heads for Yamaha Oak Custom?

Any Oak Custom owners out there? I just bought a used kit and I'm wondering what heads I should use on these babies. Thanks!

Hi,

I have a set of Oaks. I am for the most part a Remo guy. I have clear emperors and coated ambassadors. I have been using the emperors and they sound great (to my ears) tuned to my taste. I have a 10" tuned to a C, 12" tuned to a G and the 14" is tuned to an E. I just put the ambassadors on the kit and used the same tuning method and the drums are a bit less punchy but brighter and dryer. Bass drum is a Powerstroke3

Hope that helps?

Good luck,

The Oak Custom, as with most pro-level kits, will sound good with almost any drum heads. Typically, I'll run (I'm a Remo guy too) Ambassador's reso. For batter, Ambassador, Controlled Sound, Emperor, Powerstoke 3, Fiberskyn 3, even Pinstripe (my least favorite choice for good wood shells).

Oak Customs are loud drums, so ....like Class A said....what sound are you looking for?

If you're playing rock, or hard rock .....go with clear heads (brand is your choice, I run Aquarians) .....if you're playing more generic music, or ...all types, go with coated....coated will give you an overall warmer sound.........

i do notice that these drums are loud, so i'd like to control the attack a little bit.
i think i'll put some coated ec2's or g2's on them and see what they sound like.

thanks for your input guys!

Im prefering Pinstripes on my Oak. Just a great sound (especially with the die cast hoops on them)

on the kick im using a powerstroke 3 combination.
