Hello, fellows.

1. Bon Scott (tattoed dragon), played drums and flute before lead singing for AC/DC.
2. Charlie Benante, sang I'm the Man whilst Joey Belladona was playing drums for Anthrax.

All the Best,

Apparently Chris Cornell and Layne Staley were both drummers before deciding to take the microphone.

Phil Collins: No introduction needed.

Sully Erna: Godsmack - without a doubt one of the best conversions. He is up there with Phil Collins.

Tommy Lee: Motley Crue - He did a couple solo records.

Don Henley, maybe the most successful this side of Phil Collins.
Steve Tyler of Aerosmith also started as a drummer.
Peter Criss catapulted Kiss into mainstream fame with Beth.
Maurice White of Earth, Wind and Fire.
Levon Helm of the Band sang lead and now has the Levon Helm band.

Thank you!!! Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers

I knew I missed on the key drum frontmen in music. Yes Art Blakey was the one very important BIG one missing on my earlier list. Many of the sidemen in his group went on to become important voices in jazz and leaders themselves after their time spent with Art and one of his various "Messengers".

some good suggestions. Don't forget Don Henley and, of course, James Brown - also a working drummer before moving to the front of the stage!

Seems I've heard that Kurt Cobain (Nirvana) started as a drummer.

LOL I love that you had to put Nirvana in there in brackets for us :)

That's interesting though. I think there are youtube videos of him playing drums.

I think the two most famous are Phill Collins and Dave Grohl, but Sully Erna from godsmack is another one. In fact if you ever go to a godsmack show they actually pull another drumset out from under the stage and Sully and Shannon have a drum batlle duet thing. It really cool.

Most don't know this, but he actually started out as a singer, songwriter, guitarist. He picked up the drums many years later and Nirvana followed. After Nirvana he went back to his "original love" as he calls it.

Definitely an unexpected hi-light of the show for me. I was actually surprised at how good he is. I love Godsmack but never knew Sully was a good drummer. they gelled well and I was a little dissapointed when they replaced their original drummer. But what about Paul McCartney-did he play drums before or after he became famous?

I've just bought Dennis Wilson's Solo album 'Pacific Ocean Blue' & it's fair to say it's amazing, so he could easily fit into this catagory.

Taylor Hawkins. Occasionally trades places with Grohl since he can also sing.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_FcE...eature=related Sound quality is bad though. He also has his own band in which he is the singer.

Eddie Van Halen was originally a drummer, and Alex was originally the guitarist. They swapped, and the rest is history.
