Default Heads for a Tama Hyperdrive

Hey guys, I just recently bought a 6pc Tama Hyperdrive and I was wondering what heads you guys would use if you were in my position... Right now I still have stock heads on all 4 toms and the snare. I'm using a Remo Powerstroke with the standard reso head on the bass that I had on my old kit, and it sounds good with the virgin kick.

So, I'm going to need heads for all toms and the snare. As far as the toms go, the stock heads aren't too bad.. I was surprised by how good they sound. (For stock heads that is...) But I'm having a hard time deciding on which batter heads to switch to. I was thinking about either Evans EC2's or Remo Ebony Pinstripes, although I am open to any suggestions. On my old kit I had Evans G2's and Remo Ambassadors. (Both clear) I liked the sound of the Ambassadors, but was thinking about switching to coated heads for this kit...thats why I thought the Ebony Pinstripes or Ambassadors might be a good choice. As for the reso heads, I figured the stock heads will be fine.

Like I said, I'm open to pretty much any opinion or suggestions you guys have. So any help would be appreciated.... Oh, and here's a link to my kit, you can find the sizes there. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/produ...Set?sku=491349

Pinstripe heads are one of the most "muffled" heads you can buy. So going from clear G2 to ebony Pins. is kinda like goin' from A to D, and skipping B and C. If you jump to Remo, I'd go with Emperor (2 ply, like the G2) or Powerstroke 3 (1 ply with a ritchie ring). Clear heads will be the brightest, coated the warmest, the smooth white (and I think ebony falls into this range as well) somewhere "in between". You can always add a moon gel or two, but once you're at Pinstripe, you can't "un-muffle" one.

Coated pinstripes might be too muffled, whereas coated ambassadors may be a little too open (depending on what you like). I have powerstroke 3's on my superstars and I love them. They are quite open sounding, but to me they have a very nice focus as well. They also come with coatings. Give them a try some time.

Haha, I knew if you saw this thread you'd say that. I take it you're liking those on your Hyperdrives? How durable are they, I can be a heavy hitter from time to time..?

Oh by the way, I tried EC1's and didn't like them. But if you're into the ambassador sound you might. Otherwise the EC2 might be a good option if you're an evans guy.

yeh, im liking the coated ambs. on my hyperdrive a whole lot :D

they are perfect for the rack toms, they resonate heaps
and with the toms being pretty short, you can use all the sustain you can.

you may wanna get maybe emperors or powerstrokes for the floor toms though,
they resonate a whole lot. but thats what i like so i stuck with them.

for the kick, a powerstroke 3 batter and stock reso, that will get you the greatest
kick sound ive ever had on my bass drum - like a cannon!

so far ive had coated ambs. on my tubs for about 6 months now
and they have only just gotten past the coating (just worn in :D) and still sounding amazing,
so i'd say pretty durable...

if you are a heavy hitter, possibly the coated emperors, but anything with more
would start to muffle the drums a whole lot.

what kind of sound are you after anyway?

A little darker sound than the stock heads is what I'm going for. Which is why I was looking mainly into a coated head... The stock heads, especially on the 14 inch floor tom, don't quite get as warm sounding as I'd like. But eh, you can't expect much from a stock head.

i'd say try the coated ambs. then, that was the main difference i noticed when i
got rid of the stock heads - a tad darker and much more tone.

I think I'll end up with coated ambassadors, but does anyone know how the black suede heads are?
