Default Yeah yeah...bought another DW kit

You know the drill...

So I saw this deal on eBay and noticed the nice fellow was getting *zero* attention for this kit. I let the auction end and talked a deal w/ him...and offered to drive there myself and pay him cash, in person. It was only a few hrs. away in sunny Oregon.

The idea was, I'd play it in person, tune it, go through the whole pee-pee dance to decide if I like the sound. I have, after all, owned 3 DW kits now and wasn't entirely blown away...especially after getting Ludwig Classic Maple kit and loving it.

Well, I was blown away by this kit...and brought her home w/ me. To my ears, these are the best drums I've heard yet...hands down.

18x22 kick
14x16 floor
9x12 up
8x10 up
6x14 snare

Evans G2 over G1 clears on toms, G1 over Hazy on snare, EQ1 over EMAD reso on bass

Wow, really nice set! What sort of deal did you get on it?

OK, 'fess up, how many sets have you owned in the last year and how many do you own now?

Black satin with shiny chrome is such a killer look. I bet they are as pleasing to the ear as they are to the eye.

I'm curious, why did these DW's sound better than the other DW's you've owned? Where's that Ludwig kit? I like to see them side by side, and you playing each one to see the difference.

Nice find zambizzi. I've always liked that black satin finish. I've actually thought of playing these sizes at some gigs. With all this frenzied gear buying I'm going to be looking into opening my own website. It will be www.divorceddrummers.com. See all you guys over there.

Hey, the link doesn't work! :P

I've played these sizes...it helps to tune the 10" and 16" a little high to even the spread. This should be no problem with DWs and their amazing sound at all tuning tensions...

I got a pretty smokin' deal, even w/ the $80 in gas factored in. They're brand new...not s scratch on 'em...and the original owner had them for about a month before buyer's remorse set in. He had a tough time selling them on eBay, it's definitely a buyer's market right now.

AND...I'm not tellin'. :) I will say, however...."too many".

Freddy...I need to hire you as my "gear-acquisition private-relations consultant". I had to smooch some serious butt to pull this one off...especially since I've owned and sold two DW kits in the past 1.5 yrs.

The DW kit I sold was a wrap finish, for one, and it was easy to grow tired of. It was "busy". As for the sound, it had shorter toms and for whatever reason....it was a little flat. When I bought a Ludwig maple kit...I spent a lot of time going back and forth and the Luds sounded much better to me.

This kit is miles above in sound....for whatever reason - I can't explain it myself. These drums have all the low-end warmth that my old kit didn't have. I even compared older recordings to ones I've been making w/ these new ones....big difference.

Phew...everyone else, thanks!

I dig the color too...it's cool because in lower-light they have a blue-ish, "oily" hue and the chrome reflects off of it, giving it a really classy, almost ominous appearance. In sunlight you can really see the wood grain and it's just pretty.

I got really comfy w/ a 4pc. kit, so I was a little tentative about having an extra tom. At first I played it as a 4pc but decided I loved both of the smaller toms and they sounded so good together, I had to have it in there. I don't mind the ride and crash moved to the right a bit....I'm getting used to it. You'll notice I have the toms shifted to the left as far as possible to have everything easily reached.

caddy was right - the 12" makes a huge difference in rounding out the sound of the other two toms...really helps w/ melodic fills - the 12" is a very BIG FAT sounding tom. The 10" is amazing...it just fills the room w/ sound and sings. They're all just really fantastic drums...I'm very happy w/ 'em.

Zambizzi,

Congrats! I am a bad influence on you. I buy a DW, then you buy your second, I buy K hats and now you purchase them.

Honestly, all kidding aside, that is a phenomenal looking kit. Absolutely BEAUTIFUL!!!

She is even prettier than mine!!!

You are going to love your new hats too. They sound great with the kit.

I love the sizes too.

Ha! The only thing I want to have in common w/ her is a massive fortune.

I've had one wife in 10 years and 6 drum kits in 1.5...oddly disproportionate.

This definitely WON'T be my last...but I won't be swapping 'em out anymore. Time to start a collection! Too bad polygamy is illegal.

Actually, I've had this kit for about 3 weeks or so...I just didn't post it to spare myself the title of "most frequent kit swapper" on the forums...heh.

You did talk me into the hats though. It took a lot of arm-twisting but you finally convinced me. ;)

Well,

Lets see,

I started with a CB, then went to Sonor 3003, then to a Ddrum dominion, then to a Tama Starclassic, then to a Ludwig Accent Zep Set, then to Ludwig Classic Maple Bonham Kit, then to a Mapex M Birch, and now finally to my DW.

That is 8 kits in just under 3 years. I have the M Birch and DW. The others are gone.

I am begining to think I have a gear addiction problem.

So, if you have me beat, you really need help.

I pray for your soul Zambizzi.

Here's some misc. clips...mostly junk from practice sessions the last few days. I'm in no way an audio engineer, so the recording quality is steaming poo, at best.

You might get a kick out of "Dios Mio" - an original my guitar player wrote. We haven't practiced it much together so I included his recording, which is drumless...and my drum track from last night. I made up most of those drum parts in the past few days, so it's rough...and the fills are a little heavy-handed in some spots. I'm playing along to his track so the time fluctuates more than it should, in spots. We'll smooth it out and I'll post the final product soon.

The "haiku shuffle" is for another original tune we're doing called "No Haiku 4 U"...this is a shuffle/triplet monstrosity I'm working on for it.

Another great kit, the 5 piece layout makes the hardware look really prominent. Sounds great in the recordings.

I haven't been around to give you hell about DW's in a while... so... "Sell out!" ;)

Looks good!

As for the finish, it's a black stain with satin. Transtint $9 Black dye + some satin finishing agent of your choice ($50 or so will cover it) and voila!

I am a fan of the simple clean look though. New toys are always fun. =) I'm still trying to pick out a color for the shells I have in storage to build myself a kit.

Thanks Abe! Dusty's been writing a lot of "funny" stuff like this lately...this is the style he's evolved into while we've been playing. Zappa meets Weird Al meets The Beatles. He's somewhat of a diabolical madman. I'm having a lot of fun coming up w/ drum parts that are very "mainstream"-ish yet w/ my own style.

"No Haiku 4 U" is my favorite, by far. I'll post that and others as we complete a demo compilation.

Haha! Glad I could help.

I've got a different stance w/ DW since buying my first kit based mostly on buying into the marketing hype.

If I hadn't gotten them (essentially brand new) for roughly 1/3 of the price of new - I would have just gotten something cheaper that would have sounded great, as well.

My advice, buy used through eBay....best deals to be had are found there and now is the time. If you want something new, talk to Shane at Just Drums Online (member here) and he'll hook you up w/ something amazing for a price you can't beat.

Guilty....

You know, thanks to you, DMC, and Francois, I can't pretend that the wood finish is a "real wood finish" and not just a veneer outer-ply....essentially a wrap. You solid-shell fanatics have sucked all the mystery out of it!

Ha!

Holy cow! I've had showers that have lasted longer than some of your kits. That's nearly the inventory of a small local drum shop. But what matters is that you are enjoying the adventure of trying new kits. I've owned two kits in 25 years (three if you count the Frankensteined percussion thing) and I wish I would have tried more kits when I had the chance. I have bonded with my current set and it will accompany me for the rest of my life.

Hey, you said you're moving - what's going to happen to your cool custom music room?

I have bonded with my current set and it will accompany me for the rest of my life.

Hey, you said you're moving - what's going to happen to your cool custom music room?
If I had a kit that rare and beautiful, I doubt I'd be so wildly experimental myself!

Ahh the joys of being a renter! We're not moving. We held out rent for a month and the landlord decided to concede and fix all the problems. We're here for another year. You should stop by sometime soon and check out the drum-cave!

Just a bit over $2K w/ travel expenses and the new kick drum batter. Luckily I had the rest of the heads "in stock" from all the other kits I've had coming through here.

I'm guessing that's about 40%-45% of new...roughly. I haven't priced DWs lately and I've heard they had a price-increase.

You only posted yesterday and already 40 replies! This is a fantastic kit, it's plain, but somehow looks VERY desirable. Looks like one of the most playable kits I've seen to date!

Great buy
