Default What Heads for New DW Kit

Hello,

I know that the heads on my new set are a bit old.

For all of you DW owners out there, what heads do you recommend for batters are resos for my toms, snare and bass drum?

Thanks for any advice.

Mike

Hey, Mike.
Single ply heads, like the stock ones from the factory are the best bet. Evans Genera Coated batter and Hazy 300 reso for that Craviotto, Aquarian Superkick II for the bass drum and you can't miss!

I'm running coated Ambassador batters with ebony resos on the toms. SKII batter / PS3 ebony on bass drum. BTW, for resos on the two floor toms, I'm using the DW clear batters with the white ring, they sound great.

They are DW, any head will sound good ;-)

I use G2 coated, they sound great and last a long time. I agree single ply sound a little better but you have to replace them sooner.

On my DW...

22" Kick...original resonant, EMAD batter
10, 12, 14, 16" Toms...Coated G2 batter, Clear Ambassador resonant
Craviotto snare (14", sorry)...Coated Ambassador batter, Hazy 300 resonant.

I get the sound I want out of them...a low, full, warm, big sound.

I like to use coated ambassadors on the toms for the studio. It makes the "pitches" more defined, which sounds great on tape, but it tends to not allow the shells themselves to truly sing. Not enough weight in the head to vibrate the shell, as it were. The slower, more deliberate movement of the 2-ply heads seems to get the "wood" sound involved. Darn those perfect and sharp bearing edges!!!

OK,

I purchased G2 clears for all 5 toms and a genera dry for the snare.

The snare sounds amazing wih the genera dry. Just amazing to my ears.

The toms sound great but not much better than the old clear/coated dws. However, I didn't change out my tom resos. They are all double ply DW clears.

Will changing to G1 clears across the board make a significant difference in my sound???

Thanks for any advice.

Mike

The G1 clears are great heads, I think they will make a better sound than 2 ply DW's but not sure if they're worth the money. It's a fairly large price tag for 5 toms just to find out it's not a huge difference.

That is what I thought. That new reso heads wouldn't make a huge difference.

Right now, I have them tuned pretty low. I usually tune pretty high, so this is a pretty big change.

I will experiment with the higher tunings sometime this week.

Thanks for the imput Iron. You experts out there consistantly help me out. Make my learning curve smaller.

I use clear Ambassadors over clear Ambassadors on the toms and a clear Powerstroke 3 on the kick batter and a logo on the front but sometimes use an ebony PS3 on the front. The toms are tuned higher than they came from the factory but not bebop high.
