Default My New Black Panther Thick Flame

I just got this little beauty and let me tell you, it is gorgeous! I ripped off those Remo Frisbees and put on an Aquarian Hi Energy (my first try with this head) and a Classic Clear snare side head. I am in love with this sound.

I chose this drum over a 8 x 14 Starclassic Bubinga Cordia and the Warlord Valkyrie which both sounded great and had looks that kill. We (me and my guy at my local music store) tuned the Bubinga real low with loose snare tension and it sounded like a Civil War battlefield drum...very interesting and very cool.

But it was the Black Panther that won out. It's warmth could not be denied and the Aquarian head helped take out the ring that I don't want without any muffling. That way I can run this baby wide open. It still could not scratch my metal snare itch or my Unix snare itch, but those will wait for another day. As for now, I could not be more pleased.

Here are the Specs:

14 x 6 Maple in Honey Maple Burst finish
15 ply (12 mm) thick shell
die cast hoops
Blah, blah, blah
It also came with a pretty sweet case and bag

Here are the pics:

Great looking snare and I have to say the resolution of your digital pictures is outstanding.
Beautiful close up shots...what kind of camera?

I have a sweet spot for orange drums, and this one is no exception. Great buy!

I'll bet it sounds as warm as it looks. I LOVE the natural finish and look of the drum. Beautiful.

Great looking snare for sure. And great photos. Either early morning or late afternoon sun, but great lighting. Good job on both counts.

Beautiful really love that finish. I have a Hi Energy on my Black Panther too it's a great snare head I think it may be the first time I will settle on a head for a snare without getting something new every time!

Thanks to all of you for the compliments. The finish was the first thing to catch my eye, but the sound won me over. Sorry I have no mics so it will be a long shot if I ever can get soundfiles (of any of my gear for that matter).

A couple of you have mentioned my picture quality...thanks for that, too. My camera is a Konica Minolta DiMage Z 2 (4 megapixel). It's not really all that special, but I have been quite pleasantly surprised at its performance at times. Indoors, with no flash, even with adequate light it struggles to focus consistently. But outdoors in natural light it is good stuff. My wife and I chose it out of a small list of candidates in a sales contest she won...the camera's best quality was its free pricetag.

Back to the drum. I have tried several different tunings and found the snare to have a great range. The adjustable throwoff and buttplate make changes to the snares pretty quick. I know that is far from an exclusive feature, but it was certainly a selling point along with the diecast hoops. Overall, I expect I'll have a great time tweaking it over the near future and find a sweet spot. Until then...

Delicious! One of my favourite finishes.
But except that this finish is great, Black Panther snare drums sound really amazing!
I recorded with a Black Panther maple in studio once and really fell in love with the warm sound, yet it produced enough ring and attack in the high tuning range.

High quality and even more important: Very functional drums!

Karl
