Default Green Sparkle Ludwig Kit !

Hey everyone,

Here's my new Ludwig Classic Maple kit, yet again, like so many people have done before, in Bonham setup.
I absolutely love it, it sounds like a canon, as it should :D, and the mounts are sooooo much easier than stands !

I wanna thank everyone on the forum for helping when I had a question about the kit, much appreciated :D !

You all know the Bonham sizes I suppose, but for those who don't:

Green Sparkle, Classic Maple Series
-
14" x 26" Bass (with smooth coated bass drum head, acquired from LVDC)
- 10" x 14" Rack Tom (on RC, which was restored by LVDC)
- 16" x 16" Floor Tom
- 18" x 16" Floor Tom
- 6,5" x 14" Supraphonic Snaredrum
- All Ludwig hardware (only Hi-Hat stand is a Tama Iron Cobra stand)
- Ludwig Speed King Pedal (acquired from LVDC)
- 20" Paiste 2002 Ride on the right of the player
- 18" Paiste 2002 Crash on the left of the player
- 22" Paiste 2002 Ride on the Bassdrum Cymbal Mount
- 15" Paiste 2002 Sound-Edge Hi-Hats

Thanks everyone (especially LVDC !!) !

Greets !

I'm not a guy for green, but those Luddies always look classy in that color and set up. Congrats. Nice congas too.

Nice set, congratulation, you got some big ass drums there. I also play a 22" Paiste 2002 ride and a 18" crash 2002.
Do you also play the 2002 series hi hats? It's not mentioned on the specs.

Were you the one that wanted the B/O badges? The set looks fantastic. Congratulations.
BTW, I also love the B/O badges.

WOW!

Another Ludwig Green Sparkle, Classic Maple, Bonham Kit Owner. Welcome to the club!!

I love mine!!! Yours has the BO badges though. Mine do not. So, yours is actually cooler than mine.

The 26 is an earthquake starter isn't it??!!!

Enjoy the beautiful kit. Everytime you sit on the throne, remember what it was like to dream about it while not having it! This is a luxury to most.

Man that bass drum must sound like a cannon when its played, not to mention your toms. Great looking finish also. I like how the cymbal set up is very clean and non-cluttered, must be a blast to play!

Sweet kit! I hadn't realized that Ludwig had also "reissued" the rail mount. If I could have, I would have got one when I bought my kit in 1997.

Nice kit. I had a 26, 15, 16, 18 Luddy combo, so I know exactly what that kit sounds like. Big drums, big boom.

Lucky man! I own 2 classic maple kits now...these are the best drums on the market today, no doubt. To me, this is just how drums should sound.

I would imagine that kick is making pacemakers fail for miles around you. I wonder what it registers on the Richter scale? Do you find it an uncomfortable reach to get to that 14" tom, sitting so high on the kick?

No because I sit pretty high, and my arm range is long (:P), so it's not a problem.
It miight look hard to reach, but the RC is a real handy tool.

I did just notice something odd. They put the badge on the bass drum closer to the batter head instead of the resonant head. Is this normal now?

That kit is absolutely spectacular " Hammer of the Gods!" in fact. I especially like the Retro Ludwig Bass drum Head It looks correct in every way. size of the logo ,placement etc. Are these now available or did you make that up yourself? I also dig the chrome cowbell and mount off the cymbal stand is that available? Anyway good luck You have excellant taste in Drums Bro!

Thanks for the comments :).
The bass drum head is a smooth coated Ludwig head without the Ludwig logo ,and I put a transparent sticker with only the letters in black on it :).

And the cowbell mount / cowbell are simple LP accessories :).

Really?... has it been available all along? I was told they weren't available back in 1997. Ryan will write a grumpy letter to Ludwig dealer then. :-)

I got stuck with stupid "Rocker" mount. Not sooo bad, but...

Thanks for the comments ^^ :D.
The speed king is just fantastic, even this pedal exceeds the modern Tama Iron Cobra pedals IMO. I can only compare it to that, because it's the only pedal I've used besides the Speed King. But believe me, it's very smooth, and the beater has much more character than the plastic/felt beaters that Tama has for instance.

Cool setup! Looks very original, where did you find the idea for those sizes and cymbals?

In all seriousness I love the setup. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

HAHA! Good one - "pacemaker-stopping volume."

Nice set, huge drums. Your rack tom is the size of my floor tom and your floor tom is the size of my bass drum! What are they like to transport?

You'd likely kick off the apocalypse...

I too would like to try a speed king...the biggest benefit being; you could immediately do Bonham-triplets w/ your right foot.

Seriously though, you never heard *bad* things about these pedals.

Thanks for the comments :).
The inspiration for this kit was definitely without a doubt the John Bonham sound, which is my favourite sound :). I know it won't be able to achieve the sound exactly with these sizes and the cymbals, because alot has changed since the 70's. But I'm gonna try and get as close as possible :).

Now that you mention it, transporting the kit is about the only pain in the ass that occures with this kit. It just takes ALOT of space, unbelievable.

I wish it had been that easy. At the risk of coming off as, well something, I want to mention that finding a good Rail Consolette on eBay is a hit & miss situation, Crydevil’s experience is a prime example of this.
I had offered to pick one up for him, clean it, and send it along but he decided to get one on his own, ending up with one that was essentially un-useable so I had him send it to me for reconditioning. When it was all said & done the only parts that were the same as he sent me were the Rail, U-Brackets, 1 of the large Flat Washers on the inside of the Shell, the Studded Ball and two of the Nuts, the rest came out of my Parts Bin, no charge.

Just in case someone wants to pick one up please do yourself a favor and look for a Clamp that is still nice & wide open. Shown below is the one off of Crydevil’s eBay R.C. on the left and the one I replaced it with on the right, which I now need to replace to come up with a useable R.C. of my own.

Below is the RC on Crydevils Kit just before being boxed up. When looking for an RC you want the two Clamp portions to look like this, nice & open when in position so never buy one on eBay without seeing it from this angle so you know it still has life left in it. I'm working on a process to repair these since simply bending the Clamp open does no good, the short portion of the Clamp has to be bent back while keeping the Rail diameter of the Clamp intact........

Since they were mentioned I will also add that I picked up the Smooth White non-Logo Heads for him, which I had to special order then forward them on to Belgium. The reason I mention these is that they aren’t in any of the Ludwig Parts Catalogs so it’s also not an easy thing to come by with most Ludwig Dealers telling you that Ludwig doesn’t offer them, trust me, they do. Below are the specifics.

The core Part Number is LW422xLAW with the x being replaced by the Head diameter.

LW4220LAW = 20” Head
LW4222LAW = 22” Head
LW4224LAW = 24” Head
LW4226LAW = 26” Head

As mentioned, these are a Smooth White Coated Head with a Heavy designation.

I hope I didn’t stick my nose in where it didn’t belong but almost feel like I have a vested interest in this Kit, doing all I could over the course of months to make this happen with almost $100 of my own money into it and some of my most hard to come by Parts. Lest someone get the wrong idea, Crydevil did tell me that if I wanted him to reimburse me for any of my out of pocket expenses that he would gladly do so but I declined just helping a fellow drum brother out. I also sold him that Speed King for $18 + actual shipping, which was less than my cost, figuring it deserved to be behind such a Kit instead of tucked away in storage.

There, now I don’t feel so much like the Wizard of Oz, “Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain” and am glad that the Kit turned out so well……………

LVDC

Edit Note: To keep this post in context Crydevil has subsequently edited his inital post so things do not appear as they did when I made this response...........

You're a good man Jack. I bet you got a really good feeling out of seeing that set come to life. As much as you bring older drums back to life, it's cool to see an older part complete a newer drum set.

Thanks Greg! A couple of friends thought I was nuts to put money into someone else's Kit and it was indeed a good feeling to see it all come to fruition, and, as long as my wife doesn't find out, it should remain that way. Crydevil is a nice young man and it was basically this aspect that kept me in the fray and doing what I could, although I must say taking my only good RC Clamp, actually the best one I've ever had, or seen for that matter, and sending it off was hard to do. I just could'nt see putting that rusty, pitted, bent up Clamp on such a nice Bass Drum. I'm glad Crydeveil agreed and sent it to me, which showed a lot of faith on his part...........

You are the best Jack, I think you deserve the most credit for this creation, because it wouldn't be such a detailed kit without you !! You gave me alot of nice offers, which exceeded my best expectations, and helped me with the kit as if it was your own (which for a part it is :D), and I won't forget that, not in this lifetime ;), you can count on that :D.

Thanks a thousand again man !!
