I've used Pinstripes for years on all my toms from 8" to 16". They're great for metal as there's little overhang, so the beats don't get confused with each other (There's 'air' between beats even on fast rolls)
Stock resos should be fine, but when funds allow it may be worth buying 1 decent replacement reso and seeing if the changes are worth the outlay for the rest of the kit. If there's little or no improvement to your ears, save your money.

You might be surprised at how much good resos affect your sound. I'd put them on your short list.
