Default staining. HHEEELLP!

it's a crime that' i've had maple shells sitting in my garage for the past 6 months waiting to be a drumset. but now it is time, i purchased a wrap sometime ago but long story short i no longer want to use it since i think a stain would look far better. since my dad and i are building it and i'm the one who plays the drums (he's a guitarist) all the part ordering has been left up to me. so here are my questions...

1 - Where do I purchase the stain? Any hardware store?

2- What kind do I buy (since i know house paints come in eggshell, glossy, etc.)?

3 - Is there some kind of coat that must go over the stain to make it glossy? And if so, is this optional?

4 - Should only one coat be applied or is this personal preference?

5 - (This question is fun) What color should I choose? It was originally a black wrap with gold hardware but now I'm unsure. I know I still want something dark such as a dark blue or green. Do they make a black stain?

Start here: http://www.drumfoundry.com/c-18-stai...sandpaper.aspx

Read through the drum building tutorials, they include finishing tips.

Drum Foundry is a great company.

Straining is bad. When going to the toilet, you should always let it....

Oh, what a sec. This thread is about STAINING?
That's different. Never mind!......

Home Depot, Lowes, etc., at least a good place to start shopping. If you have a high end wood and flooring store around, also a good place to shop. Stains can be water base or oil. And as such, you want to use all similar types. Unless otherwise stated on the can. Chemical reactions between non-similar products can lead to disastrous results in the end product. Read labels carefully. Getting a glossy finish out of a stain usually means a clear gloss coating over the stain. The main problem with staining, you make a mistake, it's pretty much permanent. Since the stain penetrates into the wood.
