For all around playing you'll need a cymbal that's fairly thin and light, has a good amount of crashability and wash with a nice stick definition and a good sounding bell. For the blues stuff you might want to go for a not-so-bright overall sound. Here are a few cymbals I've found to work very well from anything between bebop and rock.
- Meinl Byzance Thin ride - Zildjian K Custom Dark ride - Sabian HH Manhattan ride - Sabian HH Stage ride |

My Zildjian Cindy Blackman designed 22" K Dark Ride Medium is the most versatile cymbal I've ever owned.

If you can still find this one, I would recommend the Sabian Raw Dry Ride. This is not to be confused with Raw BELL Dry Ride. This particular cymbal I just picked up and has a great low fundamental tone to it. The fact that it isn't lathed adds a very high pitched ping to the stick sound so that it's heard over the undertones. The bell sounds great and it's crashable to boot. Hope this helps.

This is the ride I always say for these all round rides but for rock and blues (and nearly everything else) it's perfect! Try Paiste 2002 ride. Prob 22" altho size is personal. Nice ping but because it has amazing wash it's perfectly balenced. Crashes amazingly well and is loud when you want it to be loud and quiet when you need it to be. Great cymbal! Go on the Paiste website their soundfiles are spot on.

Zildjian 21' Sweet Ride...Its a safe buy. Not too thin, not too heavy, not too dry, not too washy, not too piercing, crashes well. Any one disagree?

Well, other than the Yamaha R1, 998cc, liquid-cooled, short-stroke, 20-valve, in-line four-cylinder engine motorcycle designed to make 180 horsepower power at a stratospheric 12,500 rpm, I would say the best all round ride is the Zildjian K Custom Dark. Of the ones I think I'll loke but havent played, pprobably the Istanbul Lenny White 21"

I recently just played a Sabian HHX stage ride (yes Stage!) at a jazz concert and it actually played pretty well, and it sounds like it could be used for a variety of styles

I would recommend the 21" Sabian Signature Universal Ride (Ed Shaughnessy) if you were going to own only one ride. It is named Universal b/c it is pretty damn close to being universal. I nearly picked one up myself, but I currently own a 21" AA Rock Ride (very bright and pingy with a monster bell) and went with a 20" HHX Stage because I was blown away by its sound (very nice definition and lots of great wash and warm tone). Between the two, I now have my spectrum of music covered.
Hope this helps; and ALWAYS play before you pay!! |

...The perfect ride is like the prefect woman in that neither of these mythical creatures exist.
Thank God for variety. My favorite rides are my 20" Manhattan, 20" el sabor, and my 21" Wil Calhoun. Barry

Agreed. It would be my default choice if I was in the market for an all-purpose ride. It has built its reputation around its versatility.

Make is personel preference, but you probably need a medium heavy for Rock and Blues, in the 20 inch range.

I too am looking for the mythical creature - the perfect ride. I'm in the market for a lighter, more mellow alternative to my Sabian HH Raw Bell Dry Ride. I love the RBDR, but I don't need the weight/power/lack of wash at every gig. Sometimes it's just too much. I mostly play classic rock/jam band with some funk thrown in.
Consideratiions: Sabian HHX Groove Ride Zildjian K Custom Hybrid Ride Paiste Traditional Ride - Med Light Any suggestions of models from other brands? Meinl, UFiP, Saluda, Bosphorus? Sorry to hijack this thread - I'll post a new one if concensus says do it.

RIght now,
I find that my 20" K Heavy Ride is pretty good. It has many of the good qualities of the A Zildjian Ping Ride without the brightness of the Ping ride which I find personally distasteful. Heavier Istanbul Agop SE Jazz Ride or Agop green label Signature ride in 21" or 22" sizes will sound great in a very wide mix of musical situations.

I've been using just that ride for years for blues and rock, and it is great. But lately, I've been daydreaming about other rides - actually I'm thinking of cheating on my K Heavy, I want a little lighter feel, and a bit more wash. But it's a good cymbal, and I do feel guilty about it - locally I've seen a K Custom Dark and a Sweet Ride available used, so i just may go for one of those.... |

My picks are...
24" K Light Ride-- My favorite ride. It has tons of sweet spots and I can get the driest pings as well as overwhelming trashy wash, and everything in between. It can sound like an old K (well, close), a ping ride, a giant beat...it's the all-in-one cymbal. Plus, it's wonderfully crashable and the bell is cutting without being harsh. 20" HHX Stage Ride-- My favorite before I got the K Light. I used this for jazz, latin, rock, funk, and blues gigs, and it worked incredibly well for all of them. Nice pings and clicks, with a dark cushion of wash that's easily controlled. 21" Zildjian Sweet Ride-- Played on one once that I really liked. Had a "glassy" and almost "airy" character to it, but with a solid body and a defined ping. |

Best all around ride? Hmmm... I have used a Zildjian 'A' 21 sweet ride for quite a while now and have been very pleased. Some say the bell doesn't cut enough but with a pair of 747 rock sticks, it cuts fine for me. Zildjian 'K' rides are also at the top of my list. very versatile.

Wow, lots of love for the K Custom Hybrid. I think I'll go ahead and fourth (fifth?) that one. Very crashable, cuts through without being pingy, has a nice, subtle, clean wash, and a great bell. I think the only thing I would never use it for is jazz.
I also agree with the 24" K Light. All that surface area means a lot of different sweet spots for different sounds, although I don't really like how sticks with big fat tips (like my pro mark 5Bs) sound on it. |

For an all around ride:
20" Zildjian A med or 21" Zildjian A sweet ride Try both and see what you like. The sweet ride is more washy and subtle. The med ride has a more distinct ping but can still work for jazz. Wayne |
