OK, so my cymbal addiction may seem a little apparent here, and I do own two virtually identical Gretsch Catalina Maple kits, but truly I have a good purpose.

^^^ Nice! I love the Catalina Maples!
I'm sure you have had this question posed before... Why (3) 12" rack toms and (2) 16" floors?? The only reason I can see is because you can....?? Cute pic of your daughter?,, but she may do better with a Hello Kitty kit..for now..assuming that is the daughter who owns the other Cat Maple...?

To answer question 2. I call it her kit, I am "encouraging her" to become a drummer by calling them hers and letting her play them when she wants to. I don't ram it down her throat or tell her to practice (she is only 4) I just play a little, then she wants to, and she likes to show off to her friends and family. She isn't to the stage of developing a rythmic pulse yet, but she is getting familiar with the drums. I hope someday she will make me look like an amateur. Her mom is teaching her piano..... You don't have enough cymbals. Look at all that unused space above and behind the kit!

Well after months of searching, playing, pricing, agonizing.....and on and on. phew!
I finally decided on Gretsch, ordered the New Classic Bop kit today. I'll post real pics once I have them but the picture below is what I ordered...just the shells. I can't wait to get my hands on these! Last edited by BigSteve; 08-12-2012 at 07:08 PM. |

Thanks guys! I'm a bit more than excited.....tupela, that finish is called ivory marine pearl. I tried a gold sparkle in a fusion configuration at a local guitar center. The drums sounded so good. The gold sparkle is a nice finish but the imp just really caught my eye. I didn't purchase the snare....yet. I wanted to try the set with the snare I use the most lately, it's a 69 Ludwig acrolite that I like alot. Maybe get the snare in the same finish later.

I have 5 snares. Gretsch Catalina, my Keller piccolo, a Taye Maple, a PDP brass, and the Vaughncraft Steam bent. It has to be the best and my favorite. It can be very loud, great tuning range, and can be sensitive as well.

You have to many snares! Haven't you heard about the four snare law that was passed in 2007? You have to give me one! Pick one and send it to me!

I thought under the new economic stimulus plan we were allowed 5 now.

No, those with too many snares must give to the less fortunate, which includes me. I am musicially disadvantaged and need a steambent snare.

You have solid wood and would stoop for a steambent??

No, Under Stimulus Package guidelines you will receive enough cash to buy a snare drum head. (Not an entire drum!) That will be a sufficient amount of cash to restart the economy. You can trade in an old snare drum for a 20% tax credit, But the trade in snare must be crushed and it can't be resold!

I decided to go for Gretsch Catalina Maple instead of TAMA Starclassic B/B,
I know they are two different level drums but I love the sound of Maple compare to Birch Bubinga. and also the price was much cheaper, so I don't see the point of not getting Gretsch! the kit arrived yesterday and I set it up, test the sound and everything is perfect! ![]() ![]() ![]()

here's my new config. Got sick of lugging the whole kit around and setting up and packing down, so bought the DW bass drum convertor and used me 16 as the bass, 13 and 12 as hanging toms, and the 13 converted tom to snare as me snare.
In the new band the 16 wasn't cutting thru, so voila! a dinky double bass kit. Use the 16 for accents now, while i buildup the left foot! So. Much. Fun! Hope you enjoy: |

how does everyone think a 7x10 tom would sound instead of the standard 8x12??...
i want to get a Catalina Gretsch club Jazz kit,but i am so used to using a 7x10 mounted tom.

Would it be used with a 14 x 14? If so I think that would be a good interval.

Delighted to finally obtain a Renown kit, perhaps a rarer colour too it seems?
Having just spent two days in a rehearsal room with it, also trying out the cymbals I have been collecting, I could not be more delighted. First time back on an acoustic kit in 24 years - awesome! ![]() ![]() I got a new gretsch snare. 14x5 chrome over brass gretsch new classic limited. I believe only 200 of these were made. This is only my 2nd ever 8 lug snare, and I don't mind at all though, the die cast hoops make it a breeze to play. I played it against at least 10 other snares and this was my favorite. (except for an ocheltree solid steel machined snare that cost more than my whole kit). I really do like the sound of this drum, chrome over brass has this great dry crack if you hit it dead center that sits so nicely in a mix. very musical. It took a weekend to get used to the hoops being higher than my other snares though. here is two other newer pics of my 70's gretsch kit 24, 13, 16. ![]() ![]() here is an overhead picture with my a customs, i can't tell if the ride and the crash are accidentally switched or not? the crash looks really big. I use my a customs for outside gigs, and my k dark custom for inside gigs or quieter gigs.

A few changes with my Gretsch Renown Purewood African Mahogany (whew) kit since I posted a year or so ago:
With my new Gretsch Rug You can see my new Tama Starclassic 8x14 snare in the mix in 2nd photo - it's not a Gretsch, but it is one nice drum! And Daisy our Golden Retriever guarding my 1616 tom (wake up Daisy). This is not a new addition I just thought it was a nice photo showing the drum's finish. This is my new Gretsch 1949 Parade snare I bought 2 days ago on eBay - seller's photo. I should have it near the end of the month. Couldn't resist - 49 is my birth year and it's a Renown Mahogany too I think.

Well, I thought its about time I posted some pics on with my newish catalina jazz kit.
This one was from in the studio, recording an album with 'Kellys Tattoo' this one was when I went busking for 'Help for Heros' with the Motorbike club I belong to. And this is my little boy, showing us all how it should be done. He's gonna be a star when he gets older I'll get some propper photo's at some point.

Well - it's not part of my Gretsch kit ..........yet, but....
I just got this in the mail today (bought it on eBay a few days ago). It's in great shape for a 60 year old drum - better than me - lol I'm surprised at how light it is..a few pounds. I will have to be very carefull cleaning this 1949 Gretsch Renown Mahogany Parade drum - I don't want it to fall apart on me. Here it's resting beside some 23 yr old coke (I drank all the 60 yr old stuff last week). Steve Gadd & Carl Palmer autographed drumsticks for some inspiration. I ripped through some rudiments and it sounds not too bad.

Hey fellow Gretsch owners...the New Classic Bop kit finally arrived! Whoopee! After drooling over all the nice Gretsch kits in this thread I can finally post some pics of my own. I thought I posted this a few minutes ago but seems like it didn't take so I'll try again. This is such a nice little kit...loads of sound from something so small. Still fussing with the tuning and setup but isn't that half the fun??
